Product Rating:
Pros: Versatile, durable, handsome, lightweight, easy to use.
Cons: Mesh can be slightly irregular but not to noticeable.
The Bottom Line: The price is fair for the quality of bag that you buy. The Sherpa Roll Up is the most versatile pet carrier I own and will always be my favorite.
Of all the animal carriers I have used and owned over the years the one that I use the most and that has been the most versatile is the Sherpa Roll Up. I like it for many reasons. The primary reason is that it folds flat and can be stored easily in luggage. I often leave on a trip unattended by an animal but that certainly doesn’t mean I won’t come back home with one. Another very good reason is that the bag is very durable and holds up well through years of service. The Sherpa Roll Up is designed with a great deal of thought foreseeing your potential needs very accurately. It looks nice and stays looking nice. It can be disguised amongst other luggage in the back seat of the car as I have done in many of my overt operations. While a heavy plastic crate stands out like a sore thumb.
For adequate ventilation there is mesh on three sides of the bag. It is very important that your pet has plenty of airflow. I had a skunk delivered to me once. It had been in a home made carrier with holes punched through. The skunk had road in the back of a small station wagon. When the gal drove up I went to reach for the carrier and it was HOT. The skunk was very limp and hot to the touch but alive thankfully. You never realize how hot it can get further away from the front seat where the ventilation system doesn’t reach. I also always freeze plenty of plastic soda bottles full of water. I keep one frozen container in the pet crate when traveling by car. I carry these in a big freezer so that I can replace the frozen container when the other one melts.
It is easy to get your pet into the Sherpa Roll Up. It has a U-shaped zipper on top of the bag but it also offers a side opening. It is also easy to console your pet or to pass in pet goodies and give sips of water.
Even with the weight of a pet or two the Sherpa Roll Up is pretty easy to lug around. The bag itself is lightweight but also has an adjustable shoulder strap. The shoulder strap also doubles as a leash. Every little bit of unnecessary extras you don’t have to bring really helps. Since were on the subject of extra accessories you must bring for your pet.
The Sherpa Roll Up has a big roomy zippered pocket to store much of this stuff in. If you need even more storage space you can purchase an accessory pouch to attach to the Sherpa Roll Up for around $19.95.
The bag is constructed with durable, quilted nylon with mesh panels. You can purchase either the black diamond pique with caramel trim, or classic black quilted nylon with black trim. Both are handsome designs but I prefer the black quilted nylon with the black trim. The less noticeable the bag is the better.
For extra durability the bottom of the bag and the handles are reinforced. There is also a soft, removable, washable lining. Inside the bag is a leash ring to secure your pet properly. On the outside of the bag is a photo ID tag.
Your pet can have the extra feeling of security and privacy with the roll down flap available on both sides. You can either have the flaps rolled up so your pet can see out or roll them down to obscure your pet from prying eyes or to give them a feeling of safety. The flaps are really nice for a cat since they are much more comfortable in dark cozy places when in unfamiliar territory. It’s a good idea to keep the flaps partially rolled up for ventilation.
I have used the Sherpa Roll Up most often in car travel though I have used it a few times on airplanes. The bag because of its soft construction fits nicely under the seat. I know I can be confident that the bag will be accepted on the airplanes because Air Canada, Alaska, American, America West, Continental, Delta, Northwest, TWA, Tower Air, United, and US Air, has officially approved the Sherpa Roll Up.
When traveling by air make sure you check with the airline you are purchasing tickets from to find out proper procedures for traveling with a pet. I know you will need a health portfolio, including records of vaccination and a recent certificate from the vet (no more than 7-10 days old).
The price of the bags is not bad considering they last forever. OK, I have NEVER wore one out! The Sherpa Roll Up comes in three different sizes, small(16"L x 9.5"H x 10"W), medium (18"L x 10.5"H x 11"W) and large (20"L x 11.5"H x 11.75"W) . The prices are around $90.00, $100.00, and $110.00.
The bag cleans very easily. Usually I just wipe it with a damp cloth. But sometimes if it is extra dirty I just dip it in warm soapy water, rinse it and then let it air-dry. The bag should not be washed in a washing machine.
I have never found a pet carrier that works as well or stands up to abuse as well. I like the material because it doesn’t get scratched up or yucky looking like my Samsonite bag. I like the Sherpa Roll Up because it folds flat for easy traveling storage or for storage when not in use. I like the mesh on three sides for ventilation. I have never had a zipper wear out. I have never had a broken handle. The Sherpa Roll Up washes up easily and nicely. The price is fair for the quality of bag that you buy. The Sherpa Roll Up is the most versatile pet carrier I own and will always be my favorite.
