| dagny21's Full Review: Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends: Henry The Gree... |
We were on our way to a company Christmas party and decided we'd better get our two-year-old something to keep him busy during the formal dinner. We stopped at the first toy store we saw and I was thrilled to discover the Thomas & Friends wooden railway system by Learning Curve.
My son was immediately drawn to their display of trains and rails, and would have stayed for hours. I quickly chose Henry because he appeared in the Thomas & the Magic Railroad movie which my son has seen many times, and because he was large and came with an attached car. We were hoping it would hold his attention long enough to get us through the dinner.
Henry is not my favorite engine. He's a little whiny, and seems prone to sickness. But, that doesn't seem to matter to my son, who loves all things Thomas the Tank Engine, even the mean and nasty Diesel 10, scowl he tries hilariously to imitate.
I got to keep Henry until we got to the party, and I couldn't stop touching him. It's so different to buy a toy like this. Something not made of just shiny plastic, something simple, without flashing lights and annoying sounds and numerous buttons. Henry is beautiful. He's made mostly of expertly painted maple, with a plastic face and wheels, and a few bits of steel holding it all together. There are magnets on each end of both Henry and his coal tender, and they are quite strong.
My son had a few minutes frustration with the fact that if the cars are faced the wrong way they will repel rather than attract each other, but he soon figured it out. And yes, it did keep him plenty busy during the party. The only problem was there was another toddler at the table, and he really wanted to play with the train too, but my son wouldn't share.
Since buying Henry, we've decided to purchase all of this wooden railway system that we can. I'll let you know about each piece as we do so.
It's important to note that all Learning Curve toys come with an unconditional lifetime guarantee against damage or breakage, which even includes chipping paint, which will inevitably occur over time with toddler play.
