malaplan's Full Review: TiVo HD 180-Hours Video Recorder
I have been a big fan of Tivo since first getting a Series 1 Sony unit 8 years ago with a lifetime service plan. After getting a new LCD HDTV, I found that we needed a new Tivo to take advantage of the TV's HD capabilities and Tivo offered a transferal of the lifetime service to a new Tivo HD. I purchased this Tivo about 1 year ago.
I do not have cable service and I am able to receive a number of digital TV channels over the air, and the Tivo HD does a great job with this. The Tivo HD has two digital tuners, so you can record two channels at the same time. You are able to pause, rewind and fast forward through "Live TV." The other perk of the Tivo service is the ability to set up a "Season Pass" allowing you to record all of a season's episodes of a specific TV show. The Tivo service will also allow you to set up a "Wish List" and record shows based on specific keywords.
The Tivo is connected to the Tivo service (which is currently a monthly or yearly subscription, as well as a lifetime, service) through either a phone line or through an Internet connection. This also allows the ability to access various other services - viewing YouTube videos, viewing photos from photo storage websites, viewing weather and traffic information, and downloading pay-per-view movies from Amazon and other services. These other services work frustratingly slow at times. The movie download works well, but can take time to download depending on your internet connection.
If your Tivo HD is connected to your computer network, you can also save TV programs to your computer through a program available from Tivo called Tivo Desktop. You can also remotely program your Tivo HD through your My Tivo account on the Tivo.com website and program Amazon to download a movie to your Tivo HD before you get home.
Problems with Tivo include infrequent instability with the machine, having it sometimes "freeze up" requiring resetting or rebooting, and occasional pauses in responding to the remote.
