The Fur Real Friends Cat is an awesome toy. It meows, it purrs and hisses, it's head and tail moves, all like a real cat but there is no kitty litter to clean and no cat food to buy.
Here is how we came about owning one of these furry little friends. My Grandmother bought herself one for Christmas. She wrapped it up and everything and opened it at my mothers house Christmas morning. She absolutely loved the thing. Her cat was black and white and to be honest, looked like a stray cat taken from an ally out of New York City. The fur was all matted and tangled but my Grandmother thought it was the best thing ever. She had the little brush that comes with the cat and she was combing it and showing everyone that came to the house. She showed them how it worked and she would get startled when the tail moved and she would start to laugh. Gotta love Grandmas.
My 4 year old, for some reason, claimed the cat as hers. After all, it was Christmas. Now, you would think a grown woman such as my Grandmother would know better than to fight with a 4 yr old. They went back and forth a couple times over who's kitty it really was and my daughter came out into the kitchen, where I was talking with other family members, crying hysterically. She said how Meme said the cat wasn't hers and she didn't love Meme any more. Being the sucker I am, I told my daughter she had some money she got for Christmas and that we would go out the next day and buy her a kitty, a better kitty. That made her stop crying and she apologized to my Grandmother.
My Uncle, who witnessed the whole thing, told my Aunt that when she went out shopping the next day that she had better buy a cat for my daughter and sure enough, she did. My Aunt went out and found a Fur Real Friend cat for my daughter. They were popular this year and were sold out at a few stores. This one is tan and the fur is nice, not all ratty looking.
The cat is in a laying position with it's head up. The ears are pointed and have a pink plastic part to make them look more realistic. Our cat has green eyes that are made of plastic and a pink nose. It is real furry but not that soft. It doesn't feel like a real cat. The fur reminds me of any other stuffed animal.
There are certain pressure points around the cats body that will make the cat do different things. If you brush the cats right cheek, it will turn it's head to the right and the same for the left. If you pat the cat's head, it will meow. There is a spot on the back where you rub and the cat will meow and purr and sometimes lift it's tail. The tail...just like a real cat, this cat does not like to have it's tail pulled. If you pull it's tail it will screech and hiss at you. Of course my son loves this and constantly pulls the tail.
The cat takes 3 D batteries that are placed in the cats belly. There is a piece of fabric that is attatched by velcro that you pull back to reveal the battery compartment. You will need a small philips head screwdriver to open and close this compartment. This is also where the on/off switch is located. The cat will turn itself off when not used for a while to save on battery life. If the cat is left alone for an extended period of time, it will meow and purr a few times and then just stop.
This is not a plush cat, not something you would snuggle up with. You can feel the plastic parts on the inside of the cat's body which kind of reminds me of ribs. I am always telling the kids to be careful with the cat so they don't break it. My kids are rough on their toys but the cat has held up so far.
A small plastic brush is included with the cat to brush the ugly mangled cats ;) Also included is a small piece of paper that is the adoption certificate. It has the Fur Real Friends logo on the top and underneath says "Adoption Certificate, Congratulations! You are the proud owner of a special Fur Real Friend." It then has spots for you to write your cats name, your name and address and date of adoption.
This is a toy I would recommend to anyone, young or old, who likes cats but can't have a real one or doesn't want the responsibility of a real cat. My daughter plays with this cat daily and doesn't care that it's not cuddly. Not many cats are now that I think of it.
