This at $15 this little gizmo will pay for itself in the first use. Provided that the hole in your tire is large enough for you to find it, the tire repair kit is relatively easy to use if a bit messy. I have used this system to patch a lot of tires and have never had the plug fail, so it is safe to assume that this is a permanent fix. I will say that it doesn’t work exactly as indicated in the directions, but the concept is simply so as long as you can get the plug in, you are okay.
The basic concept is that you locate the hole in the tire and then use the roughing tool to rough up the inside surface of the hole so that it will accept the plug. Then you place a plug through the insertion tool and cover it in the cement and then push the plug into the hole. At this point you are supposed to be able to pull the insertion tool out rapidly and the tool will release the plug. I have found that this is not the case, and usually the plug just comes out with the tool, so I just use the tool to push the plug in without fully engaging it in the tool. This seems to work a lot better. Once you have the plug inserted you allow it to completely dry and then cut off the excess pieces of the plug.
You should note that this is sort of a sticky process, so I would use a razor blade to cut the plug rather than your favorite pocket knife.
This product does seem to have a pretty long shelf life which is good because it is usually a pretty long time before having to use it again. It had been over a year since I opened my kit and when I went back to it to plug another tire. I was kind of expecting the cement to be dried up but it seemed to work just fine. So I highly recommend this product. It is easy enough to use that if you have the ability to take the tire off the car, you have the ability to plug your tire and save yourself the big bucks of going to have the tire repaired professionally.
