Radio-controlled racing has always been thought of as a kid’s pastime. Those little cars that tend to crash into anything and everything have been manufactured for children for the longest time. Team Losi: RC Racer, by Fox Interactive takes on a different perspective. Following in the tracks of the Micro Machines games, Team Losi: RC Racer allows you to take control of a small radio-controlled car in large tracks that you can either race along or explore. The action is fast and furious, as is the fun.
Playing Team Losi: RC Racer is like playing a game that you think that you should not like based on first appearances. The game appears to have cute graphics, and it seems to be targeted to children. However, if you give the game a chance, it will show you that it may just be one of the best arcade racing games to have come out for the PlayStation.
The graphics, although cute, do the job. The cars look and, more importantly, move just like the real ones. They are very responsive, and the physics of the game are not that important, which is a good thing. The cars all turn on a dime, and that is a tribute to the work that Fox Interactive has put into the game.
Since the controls are so responsive, pushing too hard on them for a turn can lead to some potential trouble. The first few times that you play you have to be especially careful not to push down too hard on the controller to make your turns. The reason is that if you do, you will find yourself face-to-face with a wall, tree, or other obstacle that has been placed on the course just for that purpose. Although crashing into things will slow you down significantly, unlike in other games you will not lose the game based on one wrong turn. You have adequate opportunities to regain your position, even though the tracks are very short.
The short tracks were another good idea implemented by Fox Interactive. They add to the frenetic pace of the game. Another thing is that here, familiarity does not necessarily equal boredom. The tracks, although short, are difficult to maneuver, and perfecting a line is the key to the game. You must find the quickest way to go from point A to point B without ramming into too many obstacles.
One obstacle that you do want to “hit” are the gates. The gates are placed around the course in strategic positions. The gates are all different colors, and running through them will have a streak of that color following your car. Once you go through one gate, a second color will pop-up at the bottom of the screen. This color is the one that you need to find in order to get a power-up. Power-ups are a big part of the game. They allow you to do such things as become invincible for a short period of time, or have a huge speed burst. Any power-up is welcome, as you will see.
The game itself is pretty hard. The Artificial Intelligence of the cars is good. They really try to beat you, at all costs. They will run into anything and everything in their attempts at stopping you from winning that elusive gold medal.
Team Losi: RC Racer is a great surprise. Playing through is really a treat, and I would recommend this game to pretty much everyone. Do yourself a favor and give it at least a weekend rental.
