bmcnichol's Full Review: Melissa and Doug Tools Peg Puzzle
When my nephew came over for the weekend, he brought a few of his puzzles along that I had purchased him for his birthday. One of the puzzles was the Tools Peg Puzzle. My children always loved these puzzles so I figured I would gift them to my nephew. I was first introduced to Peg Puzzles in my son’s preschool.
The Tools Peg Puzzle is a wooden, colorful puzzle that contains nine individual pieces. The pieces included in the puzzle are: Saw Drill Screwdriver Level Wrench Hammer Tape measure Screws and nuts Pliers
Each of the nine puzzle pieces has a small plastic red peg in the middle of the puzzle piece. The peg is about the size of a push pin. The pegs are pressed firmly into the puzzle piece as we have never had one come loose or come out. For youngsters I love the pegs in the puzzles as it makes it so much easier for them to handle the puzzle.
Each puzzle piece has a picture of the tool on it. Each piece is manufactured well and there all smooth edges. All the pieces fit nicely into their designated spaces. The pieces range in all different shapes and sizes and are very colorful. Underneath each of the puzzle pieces in the cutout is the same picture that is on the puzzle piece. This makes for easier matching for younger children.
The board is 8.5 by 11.5 inches and about ½ inch thick and is also made of wood. The puzzle weighs about a pound and is very sturdy.
The construction of the Tools Peg Puzzle is superior to other wooden peg puzzles. The only down fall is you pay for the quality. Most of the peg puzzles cost around $10.00. I bought this on one sale for my nephew for $5.00. Personally I think the Tools Peg Puzzle is worth the price. It is one of those items that you get what you pay for. If you want a cheaper quality, hard to manipulate, cheaper puzzle, there are many on the market. I would prefer to use my money wisely and get a puzzle that will last and is made well.
The manufacture recommends the age for these puzzles as two to five years. I do think a five year old would get bored with this puzzle.
Puzzles are great for they teach matching three dimensionally, teach fine motor skills and how to manipulate items into spots. . I think puzzles are challenging for children and it gives them a sense of accomplishment when they complete them, helping with self esteem. I also like that puzzle are a quiet activity. The tool puzzle has also helped with tool recognition and understanding as to what each tool does.
My nephew has had his puzzle for about a year and a half and it shows no noticeable signs of wear or tear. My nephew can be hard on toys but you could not tell by this puzzle. During this time the puzzles have not peeled or warped.
I would highly recommend the Tools Peg Puzzle for any toddler.
