| Naval's Full Review: Toshiba SD-3109U DVD Player |
I bought the Toshiba SD 3108 since comparable Sony DVD players offering composite video output were way overpriced. Although the player has performed adequately well, and was an affordable purchase, it has caused some problems.
Pros:
- Relatively affordable for a component video-out player that'll pass through DTS signals and decode Dolby Digital (5.1)
- Rich featuresets, including zoom, 3-D digital noise reduction, etc.
- Tons of great offers, including free netflix rentals, free Hollywood video rentals, and five free DVDs from Warner Brothers (albeit mostly bad movies like Eraser and Sphere).
- High quality images - sharp and bright. Almost as good as the high-end Sonys.
Cons:
- Became noisy after a while - audible hum sometimes detracts from the listening experience
- The Dolby Digital out is pretty useless, unless you happen to have an amp or a receiver that doesn't do the decoding
- The remote is clunky and drab. It's full featured, but I prefer using the remote from my Sony Vega TV.
- Slow loading times on the menus and screen selections. Takes a while to load the disc after the disc is inserted. The Sonys feel faster in this regard.
