| toiletoctopus's Full Review: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen |
For the last week, I've been trying to get away from home for a couple of hours, to see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. As a child of the 80's, who spent considerable time watching the cartoon series and award winning 1986 animated movie, I have to admit a bias. The autobots and decepticons could probably dance on screen for an hour, and I'd love it, just to be able to see them. With that being said, I was a huge fan of the first Michael Bay rendition of the series a couple of years ago. The first day it was released I went to see it in the theaters, and as soon as the DVD was available, I picked it up to see it again.
In this movie, we learn that young Sam Witwicky(Shia LaBeouf) is going off to college. He's not going to take his protection officer Bumblebee, and is having going away issues with his girlfriend Mikaela Banes.(Megan Fox) She is so smoking hot, that I would attend a local junior college to be with her, instead of studying on the opposite side of the country. He goes off to school, where his studies are interrupted by numerous hieroglyphic like symbols, and a rather hot chick who turns out to be something rather unexpected.
The beginning takes awhile to get going, as there are a few dry spots, but thankfully they are saved by some rather juvenile and crude humor. Mojo the dog once again steals the spotlight with his rather unique canine behavior, in a scene that had me laughing so hard, that I almost choked on my popcorn. After Decepticons decide that Witwicky's symbols are going to lead them to a mysterious energy force, they decide to invade Earth with brutal force. The character Fallen makes his appearance as a devious evildoer, who will stop at nothing to regain his former powers, and destroy the Earth while getting at it.
Sam Witwicky once again proves to be a valuable human, and the military and autobots fight off the Decepticons. This movie is not for the faint of heart, and is pretty much action oriented throughout the entire production. It seems a lot of the professional critics blasted the movie for this, because they had a difficult time figuring out which transformer was an Autobot or Decepticon. I had no issues with this, and don't understand what their complaints are about. The story itself is a bit ridiculous, but isn't it supposed to be? While it does have some holes, I found it to be mostly complete, even though
I had to laugh at the Udvar Hazy Center Museum scene. One minute Witwicky, Banes, and Agent Simmons(John Turturo)are in the museum, and when they leave the compound they are surrounded by a field of deserted aircraft. Last time I checked, they would have run into Dulles Airport. Most won't recognize this fact, but as a frequent visitor to that museum, it was worth a chuckle. Agent Simmons once again plays the crazy guy, and I think this actor is worth his weight in gold. I haven't seen him in any other films, but he's now one of my favorites. He used to work for Sector 7, as was the case in the previous film, but comes in to help Witwicky and Co. to kick the Decepticons around again.
In addition to "characters who are characters", I love Witwicky's parents. They provide a lot of humor, and the scene where his Mom gets high, gave me quite a few belly laughs. Kevin Dunn and Julie White have real chemistry on the screen, and in some ways remind me of my parents when I went off to school. As for other supporting roles, Major Lennox(Josh Duhamel) and Sgt. Epps(Tyrese Gibson) do a fine job in representing our military again. There's a lot of give and take on their part, and I loved how Lennox kicked a pain in the rear bureaucrat out of a plane. That scene was priceless, and I wish I could get the opportunity to do this.
If you are into action genre movies, you'll fall in love with this flick. Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen so much blowing up, shooting, and crazy aviation scenes in any film. The Autobots and Decepticons have Optimus Prime, Megatron, The Fallen, Starscream, Jetfire, Mudflap, Bumblebee, Ironside, and Ratchet in their portfolio, along with a whole bunch of new characters. A lot of them are humorous, and show a lot of personality. You can expect a decent laugh from them taunting each other, humans, and even trying to get some action from the beautiful Megan Fox.
I couldn't help but get distracted by her, which is a good thing. She has got to be the most beautiful woman in Hollywood, with her dark hair, piercing blue eyes, and body that had me thinking in the gutter. There are a lot of scenes of her, such as the one where she is bent over a motorcyle, or bouncing along that made it hard for me to keep up with the action. Even though she's ridiculously smoking hot, I like the level of emotion and quick thinking that she delivers on. I'm also impressed by Shia, who somehow makes us believe that us regular Joe's, could be dating something that far out of our league.
The acting throughout is decent enough, even though its obvious that there won't be any Oscars for the hard working cast. Then again, that's not something this movie is ever going to win anyway. The cinemotography was well done, as I was amazed by some of the views shown of Egypt and other parts of the world. The battle scenes that accompanied this scenery were fast paced, but the clarity of what was occuring allowed you to not lose track of who was fighting who, and what the ramifications were on any given battle.
I don't know how much they spent to produce this movie, but the special effects and weapons used were incredible. My favorite transformer was the Decepticon who looked like a Scorpion type creature, who was able to suck up cars, sand, and God knows what else. He had some awesome digging devices, and when it climbed up on the top of a pyramid, you couldn't help but be impressed with it. The movie is a bit long, running in at over 144 minutes, but there were few dry spells after the initial opening scenes. This is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, and I fully recommend it, for older children and above.
