techojo's Full Review: Trauma Center: Under the Knife for DS
Ever since the Nintendo DS debut, people have been thinking, "this is just another gaming gimmick." After a few initial rounds of uninspired and lazy games, Trauma Center comes into the fold with such a unique spin on stylus use on the DS.
I can safely say that this game makes the best use of the Nintendo DS's stylus. Others will argue that Kirby's Canvas Curse should take that honor, but I must enthusiastically disagree.
I can see it now...the developers were thinking, "You know what would be like totally rad? Playing surgeon! I mean cutting people is fun!" OK...maybe it didn't go like that. I'm sure the developers aren't that sadistic. But they had a brilliant idea that the stylus can be used as surgical tools like hand lasers, scalpals, pumps, etc.
In Trauma Center, you play the role of young Dr. Derreck Stiles, a surgeon with promise and a healing touch. You start off doing very simple surgical tasks, but only after a few cases, the difficulty sky rockets.
Herein lies the problem with this game. You are playing against time and your patient's ability to stay alive. These to things will get your adrenaline pumpimg. The game will get very stressful at times and you will curse it to the high heavens. Real surgery must be easier.
There are certain missions where quick cat-like, eagle-eye accurate actions are required to even pass. Then there are missions where it seems unbeatable. That's where Dr. Stiles special ability comes in - The Healing Touch. Essentially, with a few strokes of the stylus, Dr. Stiles can slow down time to your advantage. But even this is not enough to win. Yes...the game is THAT hard.
Despite the difficulty, the game is uber-fun. The graphics are sound/music are nothing to hoot and holler about
The storyline in all honesty is ridiculous and non-sensical. I won't bother trying to detail the story but trust me on this. I find myself tapping continuously to skip past the talking heads as fast as possible to get to the meaty surgery levels.
The bottomline: Great gameplay, utilizing the stylus in a creative and efficient manner. If you own the DS, and don't mind the animated blood, get this game. The adrenaline you will feel is worth the price of admission alone.
Oh for those who missed it the first time, Atlus is re-releasing it, giving you a second chance to experience a truly creative game.
