| modernmarvel's Full Review: Tuck and Roll's Drive 'Em Buggies - California Adv... |
Tuck and Roll's Drive 'Em Buggies are the Disney version of bumper cars. The best part is the clever theming. However, this is your basic bumper car ride that you could find in carnivals anywhere.
THE RIDE
Tuck and Roll's Drive 'Em Buggies are bumper cars just like the traditional ones you find in many parks and carnivals. The Disney twist is only in the clever theming. The bumper cars are designed to look like Tuck and Roll from the movie A Bug's Life. The ride takes place in a canvas circus tent. The lighting looks like christmas tree lights. The ride itself is very predictable. You get in the car, drive it around, give and receive a few bumps and then the ride is over. Kids may like the ride but I was a little disappointed in the predictable experience.
You get 1 minute and 50 seconds of drive time (I timed it while bored waiting in line). Driving is simple. There is a pedal to make the car go. If you take your foot off, the car stops. There is no reverse. There is also a basic steering wheel.
The first time we got on this ride, my daughter spent over 1 minute tangled up with another child driver and didn't get to drive around much at all. She was very disappointed, especially because we waited in line for over 20 minutes. She left in tears.
The second time we had better luck and we all enjoyed the ride. My 4 year old particularly enjoyed driving, although he didn't know how to get out of traffic jams so I had to take the wheel a couple of times. The nice thing about the cars is that there is a "go" pedal for the driver and the passenger. So, if your child can't coordinate the pedal and driving, the parent can still make the car stop and go.
My only gripe about the cars is that there is a large padded bar that you pull down on your lap for safety. Being 6 months pregnant during our ride, I couldn't get the bar down over my belly and it rested on my belly for the whole ride which was uncomfortable. Any large or pregnant people will feel very squished in these cars.
Ironically, even though this ride is in the kiddie section, you have to be 42 inches to get on. During our first visit, no one measured our kids. However on our second visit, they did measure my son. Luckily, he made the cut. Make sure you measure your kids before you get in line.
LOCATION
Tuck and Roll's Drive 'Em Buggies are located in A Bug's Land. This area has one of the best theming jobs I have ever seen. It is based on the Disney / Pixar movie "A Bug's Life." The detail is amazing and you will find something cute or clever in every corner. Even the foliage and landscaping are designed to make guests feel as small as bugs. Benches are designed to look like they were made out of popscicle sticks - lights are made of gigantic drinking straws and fireflies. All of the rides and attractions in this area are designed for children (although I saw a lot of adults on them). Even if you don't have small children, take a walk through to check it out.
THE WAIT
The waiting area is nothing special. Basically, you line up in a pen with no special theming. The only view is the ride itself and other bored people waiting. There is also no place to sit but you are under a canvas cover so there is protection from the sun.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
I thought this ride was just okay. The best part was the clever theming. If you took that away, it would be a basic carnival ride you could do anywhere although the wait would probably be shorter.
