| grayjessie's Full Review: Tushies the Gel-Free Diaper |
I have been using cloth diapers during the day and disposables at night on my daughter Emma. At first, I used Drypers disposable diapers for nighttime, but after a local store stoped selling them, I switched to those new Pampers First Steps diapers. Bad News! Emma got such a horrible rash from the Pampers diapers that I just had to find something different for nighttime.
After researching different disposables online, I came across an ad for Tushies disposable diapers. The ad said they were gel free, perfume free and latex free. The ad also said that they were healthier for a baby's skin. Since I was having such a hard time getting rid of Emma's diaper rash, I went on a search for these "wonder diapers". I was finally able to locate some at a health food store 3 hours away from where I live. It was worth the bus ride to get Tushies, until I saw the price: $15.99 for 22 large diapers! Wanting to help Emma out, I just gritted my teeth and bought two bags of them.
Well, to make a long story short, after using Tushies diapers on Emma for a week, her bad diaper rash cleared up and I decided to use Tushies diapers at night from now on. Emma has been using them for 3 months now.
ABOUT TUSHIES:
Tushies diapers are disposable diapers that use a natural cotton and woodpulp fluff blend for absorbency. There is no superabsorbent gels or fragrances in Tushies. Because of this, your baby's skin isn't in contact with chemicals 24/7. Tushies are dye free and latex free. I have a latex allergy, so this makes diaper changes safer. These above features are great for babies with eczema. Since there is no gels in Tushies, the diaper is a lot thicker than most disposable diapers, but they are just as easy to put on your baby.
Another feature of Tushies is the cloth like outer cover with no elastic waistband and tape tabs instead of Velcro tabs. Having no elastic waistband helps get more air to a baby's bottom and the tape tabs help prevent your baby from taking off his diaper and streaking around the house.
Tushies diapers come in 6 sizes. Here they are in order:
Premature= up to 3 lbs./ 30 per bag
Newborn= 4-5 lbs./ 30 per bag
Small= 6-14 lbs./ 40 per bag
Medium= 12-24 lbs./ 30 per bag
Large= 22-35 lbs./ 22 per bag
Toddler= 27 lbs. and up/ 20 per bag
Tushies diapers have on their refastenable taping area the name "Tushies" in green lettering (Premature and Newborn sizes don't have this on them).
ME AND EMMA'S EXPERIENCE
Like I mentioned in the beginning, once I started using Tushies diapers on Emma, I noticed her diaper rash improving, even if she had the diaper on all night long. Tushies diapers didn't leak or lave red marks on her thighs (where the leg elastics are), nor did she seem bothered by the thickness of the diaper. It was also very easy to tell when she wet a diaper, because Tushies get very heavy looking when wet. This wasn't the case with the Pampers, where you couldn't tell if they were wet or not without feeling them.
My sister also likes Tushies diapers (and the TenderCare diapers made by the same company). She uses them on her disabled daughter because they contain runny bowel movements better than Pampers or Luvs.
One last thing I like about Tushies is the packaging. It has a cute forest theme, instead of an overly cute baby on the front.
The only cons I found are that Tushies are expensive and hard to find in most stores. After using Tushies on Emma for a month, I started to buy they directly from the company by the case, which is cheaper in the long run.
WHERE TO BUY TUSHIES
I bought Tushies at a health food store at first, but later bought them directly from the company. Most herbal and health food stores that sell baby products probably will sell Tushies. Like mentioned above, you can also buy Tushies directly from the company.
For more information about Tushies and their other great products (TuishesWipes, TushieMates inserts, and TenderCare gel free diapers), go to www.tushies.com or call 1-800-344-6379.
Tushies will also send you samples of their products when you call and ask for them.
Overall, Tushies disposable diapers are a perfect companion to cloth diapers and I highly recommend them for any baby's tushie!
