I've never had really, really bad acne, but I've always had some. My biggest problem is that my face always seems to be oily. I don't have sensative skin at all, I could probably wash my face with iodine and it would still be greasy. My mom heard about this product somewhere and bought it for me. I read the directions carefully - a three-step acne regime is the sort of thing that you have to be careful with.
Step One is a "Purifying Cleanser". The active ingredient is Benzoyl Peroxide 2.25%. I found it easier to do this in the shower, because you have to have a wet face to use it, but it is a twice-a-day application, so I had to just wet my face and rinse it off in the sink every morning. The back of the bottle said to work it into a lather, but it didn't lather that well for me. It was very gritty but I didn't actually mind (like I said, I have tough skin).
Step Two was the "Renewing Toner". It had no active ingredient, and I wondered why they even put it in the system, but I'm glad they did because this is my favorite step. I like the smell; it reminds me of my highlighter. (No, I'm not being sarcastic, I really do like it.) The instructions say to "apply to entire face with a cotton pad avoiding the eye area. Do not rinse". It made my skin feel a little firmer.
Step Three is "Repair Lotion", active ingredient Benzoyl Peroxide 3.7%. This was also applied with a cotton ball. It was gritty like the cleanser, but this wasn't supposed to be rinsed off, so I waited a few minutes and toweled off the grit.
In the box was a free trial of a spot treatment called "Acne and Blackhead TERMINATOR". The word terminator written in all caps on the bottle looked fierce and aggressive, presumably to scare all the acne away. It actually scared me a little when I applied it to the first zit and I experienced, for the first time in my life, an acne product that actually stung. Facing both Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide, my overconfident oil-glands cowered a little bit. I would definitely recommend if you have sensitve skin, don't even touch this stuff. Anyway, I wound up only using it at night anyway because it made my face shiny.
The whole system can be used on the face, chest, and back. Acne on my neckline that had been there for two years cleared up in three days. It's still gone. My face took about a week. Then something terrible happened. I went on vacation.
I spent the first day at the beach and came home with a beautiful sunburn. That night I went to wash my face with Acne Free and I almost cried, it stung so badly. I didn't use it all week and came home from my vacation with a trace of a sunburn and a heck of a lot more than a trace of acne. As soon as the sunburn faded, I resumed use of the Acne Free stuff, but it didn't work. I tried for two weeks, but my face didn't clear up at all. Worst of all, I developed acne on my back, which I've never had before in my life.
So the conclusion? It's a miracle. But if you stop using it for a period of time, it could very well stop working. That's your risk to take.
