| jro26's Full Review: Vitamin B-5 (Pantothenic Acid) |
Vitamin B-5 also know as Pantothenic Acid is another vitamin from the B family. Her is some information that you all will want to know.
Just Basics
Vitamin B-5 is available from natural sources as well as synthetic sources, no prescription is required to take this vitamin. It is water-soluble and the DV (daily value) is 10mg, the Dietary Reference Intake is 5mg, and the probable intake for disease is 5-20mg.
Natural Sources Where You Can Find Pantothenic Acid
Avocados, bananas, blue cheese, broccoli, chicken, collard greens, eggs, lentils, liver, lobster, all kinds of meats, oranges, peanut butter, peanuts, peas, soybeans, sunflower seeds, wheat germ and whole-grain products.
Benefits of Vitamin B-5/Pantothenic Acid
Vitamin B-5 promotes normal growth and development especially in children. It also aids in the release of energy from foods and helps synthesize numerous body materials. The next few benefits are just possibilities, which means they have not been proven to the fullest extent as of yet. Vitamin B-5 may possibly stimulate wound healing in animals (wouldn’t that be great!), alleviating stress (oohhh even better), and reducing fatigue.
Who May Benefit From Additional Amounts of Vitamin B-5
Anyone with inadequate caloric or nutritional dietary intake or increased nutritional requirements may be required to have a higher amount of Vitamin B-5 in their diet. Also, people who are over 55 with vitamin-B deficiencies, pregnant or breastfeeding women, abusers of alcohol and drugs, people with chronic wasting illness (including: Spruce, celiac disease, regional enteritis), those under excess stress for long periods of time, anyone who has recently undergone surgery and athletes or workers who participate in vigorous physical activities.
What the Deficiency Symptoms for Vitamin B-5 Are
Well, no proven symptoms exist for pantothenic acid alone. But a lack of one B vitamin usually means lack of other B nutrients. Pantothenic acid is usually given with other B vitamins if there are symptoms of any vitamin-B deficiency. Including excessive fatigue, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, nausea or dermatitis.
Usage Information
What this vitamin does: Vitamin B-5 is converted to a coenzyme (a coenzyme is a heat-stable molecule that must be loosely associated with an enzyme to perform its function) in energy metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fat. Vitamin B-5 is available as a tablet and is also a constituent of many multi-vitamin/mineral preparations and B-Complex vitamins. Take pill/tablet with a full glass of water and do not chew or crush. Try to take it within 1 to 1 1/2 hours after eating a meal.
Precautions and Warnings
Do Not take if you are allergic to pantothenic acid or are taking levodopa for Parkinson’s Disease. Consult your doctor about taking this vitamin if you have hemophilia. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding do not take more than the recommended dose. No effects on lab tests are expected if you are taking vitamin B-5. ***Avoid doses that are greater than 5 times the RDA.
Overdose/Toxicity
For symptoms of an overdose discontinue vitamin and consult a doctor. Be careful when taking Vitamin B-5 as an adverse reaction/side effect can be diarrhea. If you experience diarrhea discontinue or lower your dosage to the amount of the DRI levels.
Interactions
Vitamin B-5 taken along with Levodopa can crate a combined effect. Small amounts of pantothenic acid nullify levodopa’s effect. Carbidopa-levodopa combination is not affected by this interaction. Also tobacco decreases the absorption and smokers may be required to take supplemental pantothenic acid.
Lab Test To Determine a Vitamin B-5 Deficiency
The methods are limited and expensive to testing for B-5 deficiencies. Tests are only used for research at this time. Methods are available to measure blood levels and levels in 24-Hour urine collection
Please make sure to consult before you make any decisions about changing your diet or your vitamin supplements.
