| jadestar's Full Review: Vitamin B-5 (Pantothenic Acid) |
After 10 years of acne, I thank my lucky stars that my dermatologist recommended that I take pantothenic acid (otherwise known as vitamin B5) as a supplement for my acne problems. Within a week of swallowing 2 1000mg tablets daily, my skin was not as oily, my pores were smaller and best of all, my pimples shrank! It's been 6 months, and my face is perfectly clear!
Now, 2000mg is actually 200% of the recommended daily allowance for this vitamin but so far, I have not had any side effects with such a high dosage. I get my blood checked regularly by my family doctor and I am perfectly healthy. This is probably due to the fact that Vitamin B5 is a water soluble vitamin so your body will use what is needed and flush out the rest in your urine, making the vitamin virtually non-toxic.
There has been research done on this vitamin by a scientist, L.H Leung, in Singapore and its effects on acne. It seems that people who are prone to acne tend to have a deficiency in this vitamin. How? Because pantothenic acid is needed to metabolize fat and synthesize hormones. When restricted to a limited amount of pantothenic acid, the body will utilize the vitamin in such a manner that is advantageous to the individual. Of course, hormone synthesis is more important since the continuation of humans relies on the development of the reproductive organs. If all of the vitamins are used up in synthesizing hormones, there is little left to metabolize the fatty acids in our bodies. Thus, fatty deposits accumulate in the sebaceous glands, sebum excretion is increased and acne appears. Therefore, supplementing with pantothenic acid or eating lots of vegetables that contain it would alleviate acne problems.
I also mentioned that pantothenic acid relieves stress. This is because pantothenic acid, which is also known as the "stress vitamin", is also needed to synthesize the glucocorticoids that are needed to combat stress. Now, this also explains why acne flares when we are under stress. Since pantothenic acid is used to produce the stress hormones, there is little left to metabolize the fat.
If you are having acne problems, try taking pantothenic acid. You might have a deficiency. Take the about 2000 - 5000 mg of the vitamin daily for about 1-2 months and cut down to 500mg daily. If you are concerned about the effects, please see a physician about it.
