| jonbmw's Full Review: Whistler DE-1610 Radar Detector |
When I bought my whistler radar detector, my main consideration was price. And for $40 (after rebate) from a recognized leader in radar technology, you can't go wrong. It picks up all radar bands and 1 safety band with plenty of warning time. I've had it go off a full 6 seconds before seeing see the cop, plenty of time to slow down. This model does not protect against lidar (laser). This isn't important though because it is virtually impossible to detect unless you're already caught. For more information on radar, laser, and how to avoid tickets, check out radartest.com. That's where I learned everything I know in addition to epinions. When you know how the cops think and what they use, you can make a better decision as to what features you are willing to pay more for.
The only negative thing was that it is hard to know what band it is detecting. It has a green LED for power, an orange LED for city, and about four red LEDs that indicate signal strength. It has a different sound for each band but all of them sound similar. So, basically you know there's a signal out there and how strong it is, but not which type of signal. I guess it's not that important if it's X or K/Ka. The safety indicator is a totally different display, so you know whether it's a safety or radar alert. It also has a different display for instant-on radar, the hardest to detect. It lights up all LEDs and chirps at the fastest rate to get you to slow down quick. The only other downer is that the suction cups are a little weak and unstable with the mount. Oh yeah, and if you're driving with it (illegally) in VA or DC, cops can detect your detector using VG2 without you knowing.
Overall, again, I think it's a great value for those who don't need a bunch of unnecessary extra features, and I would recommend it. Check out detailed specs and pics on this and all the Whistler detectors at whistlergroup.com.
