Opinion Summary
Who Moved My Cheese? A self-help, wet dream.
by kristinafh | Aug 06 '00
Pros: The print is larger than normal. That's good, you wouldn't want to miss a word. <cough>
Cons: It's sad that the author thinks that this makes such a huge difference in so many people's lives.

Excellent Review! (Reply to this comment)
by gregiii
I received the book from my "relatively" large company which is not listed in the book or your review. Unlike the other companies, my company cannot stop changing for several reasons, some good some bad.

Regardless, after about 10 pages (ca. 1-2 minutes) I had to put the book aside due to the excruciating pain of being confronted with common sense. I too had hoped that the book would address the reasons for change.... Change needs to be managed, not just dealt with.

After your review I do however feel that at least others are forewarned! Wish I had seen your (quite amusing) review sooner.

Thanks for taking the time to read the book and -most likely- dealing with the pain better than I did!

is that such books get written at all, but that millions come to swear by them. Apparently our need to come to terms with life's realities cannot be served by reason.

Well done on a most enjoyable review.

"Talking down to the masses" (Reply to this comment)
by rheaton
I agree that this book is NOT for anyone with some basic common sense or a decent brain. Unfortunately this book IS for a lot of Americans. There are too many of us who believe in the promise of " Entitlements " and their "Right to be happy and wealthy". These are the people that should be FORCED to read it. They are also the people that would get less than nothing out of it. They are the Hems of the world.

I own the book and I read it ( 30 mins cover to cover including the RAH RAH sections). And I came away with the same basic feeling. I know all this. I've heard all this. But I also came away thinking " I know a few hems..in fact I work for a couple."

Sometimes you just gotta talk down to the masses even if it ticks off quite a few of them.

I agree, skip the purchase and read it next saturady at the library. You won't even be late for lunch ( cheese sandwich of course.).

got a kick out of this book. Unbelievable that they charge twenty bucks for it but I found it kind of fun. I got mine at the library though.

Great Cheese Parody at <b>www.CutCheese.com</b> (Reply to this comment)
by TomeRaider
I just (belatedly) read the excellent summation of Spencer Johnson's "Who Moved My Cheese?" and thought folks might like to know that Crown Publishers (Random House) has just published a parody of that book. "Who Cut the Cheese? - An A-Mazing Parody About Change and How We Can Get Our Hands On Yours" mercilessly spoofs all the areas you found annoying in the original book. "Who Cut the Cheese?" will make a great gift for anyone who's read the original. Check it out at www.CutCheese.com!

I'm always glad to see someone tee off on snake-oil peddlers, especially multiple offenders like Dr. Johnson (he has already helped perpetrate The One-Minute Manager).

What really struck me about your review was the list of organizations that have inflicted copies of this gobbler on their hapless employees. AT&T, Goodyear, Procter and Gamble...their shares have gone into the tank this year. Coincidence?

Boy, does this cheese stink! (Reply to this comment)

What a breath of fresh air after a long whiff of some really stinky Cheese. But be glad. Not only did I have to READ the book, but my manager forced our department to watch the VIDEO. You have no idea how bad it can get. There's even a workbook to go with it. So, imagine reading the book aloud...in a group...and then applying its profound life lessons to your own experiences with change. Since you've read the book, I think you get the point.

Thanks for spreading the word.

Re: I think you missed the targeted audiance..... (Reply to this comment)
by kristinafh
Yea, i think you missed it too. Maybe you haven't noticed whats going on in the world.

I have noticed what's going on in the world. What's going on is not what the book is talking about. This book would have been a better tool back in the 70's when the country was going through a recession and people were really losing their jobs. With a very low unemployment rate (what is it now, 1%), jobs are for the taking. It may not be what you want, but they are there.

A lot of peopl'e jobs are ending, and they need to move on to a new career.

Somewhat true. Those who have been doing the same thing for 20 years are probably experiencing some unpleasant changes in their career. This isn't their parents generation where you work the same job until you retire.

Other People don't realize that its getting harder and harder to survive on a Middle Class Income, and they need to do something different.

Agreed.

You are totally entitled to your opinion that People Don't need books like this. Yes its a very simple book. But thats the POINT. Change happens, dont Complicate things. You really wanted to see a Complicated Book about Doing the Most Simplest thing, (when change happens, move with the change) just so you could feel Intelligent?

You are absolutely missing the point. The companies that are purchasing this book are targeting this towards the wrong audience. Those of us in our 30's and 20's are used to change. Heck, we change jobs every 2 years (on the national average I believe). As a byproduct of experiencing so much change, this information is intuitive.

It's really not for people with small brains, its a book for people with Big Brains, who Use all the wrong parts, of their Big Brains.

I don't remember anything about brains being involved in this book. Maybe that's where it failed. It should be not about intelligence, but about common sense. And it's a sad day when someone makes millions and billions off of common sense.

I'm sure you are Very Intelligent, and this kind of stuff is Simple for you to understand. You dont need a book to tell you that kind of stuff. In fact you must live a Wonderful Life. I also imagine that nothing ever bothers you. You should write about your life sometime. Give us some advice that would be Better than just Moving with the Cheese. I like honest people. Take Care

alvin king

That last statement sure is loaded. Yes, this is simple for me and others to understand because change is constant and we have experienced it first hand. We also possess common sense.

I don't live a perfect life. And how you deduced that from an epinion escapes me. Insight would be appreciated. If I have a perfect life, I would like to bottle it and sell it because then I could make as much money or more as this author.

Alvin, come on now. First, you do not rate an epinion NR because you disagree with it. You're supposed to rate it based up on how well-written it is. You gave me a NR because you disagree with my opinion of the book. So, you've completely contradicted yourself that you like honest people. You should have probably said, I like honest people who agree with me. That is a more of an accurate statement. Kristina

Everyone but you. That's the other point. We cannot stop other people from Moving it. So we have choices, to get mad and complain, but do nothing, or Laugh at our ignorant approach, Or we can just keep an eye out, and when it happens, act fast. Hooray! I was beginning to feel like I was the only person that thought this book was an insult to my intelligence. We were given it to read by the boss and determine "who we are" Well, hello! Like anyone would say they were anyone but Haw. This book has made me have dreams of mice - or shall I say nightmares! Thanks for making me have confidence in myself again for thinking that this was a real waste of 60 minutes.

Hi! Nice epinion, as usual!

I've been wondering though: has the author gone mad, or what? It looks like he's BRAINWASHING YOU, telling you that "this book is the best book you will ever read because I say so".

MAYBE it's more of a kid's book. I mean, look at your pro..."The print is larger than usual". AND Geez, he really thinks we're dumb, doesn't he?

ANYWAY, maybe I should skip it. Thanks for the info! I was about to bid for it at qool.com!

for giving a pointed review to some of these blatantly insipid, simplistic self-help books out there. The idea that's it's just a matter of "psyching yourself" up to the challenge in a formulaic manner totally negates the idea of each individual issues and methods towards a fuller life. Of course, the big corps would like one answer to suit all of us

Arghh! Another self pro-claimed expert in an self-invented field! (Reply to this comment)

Isn't it absolutely delightful how we look to the New York Times best-seller list to measure the reading worthiness of a book? Well, thanks to "Who moved my cheese", we should be grateful that these horrific self-help books exist to bring the status of being on the best-seller list back to earth. After all, the Bible is THE BEST SELLER of all time, but we don't exactly pick up on a Friday evening to read for fun. Okay, some people do, but let's not go into execptions. <Shudder>

I loved your cons statement. I'm sure that the author is beaming and promoting his book endlessly to his neighors. I imagine party conversations goes something like this:

Neighbor: Hey, how about those Redskins, huh? Think they'll make it to the Super Bowl this year?

Dr Johnson: You know what's really SUPER? My latest book, Who moved my cheese! It's about 4 people with corny names and it talks all about me and my fascinating theories . . .

Of course, who am I to say what Dr. Johnson really does with this time? Still, at least I now know that my time shouldn't be wasted reading this book.

Awesome review,

Cheers,
Ender

Oops! Well, I guess 2 out of 3 ain't bad. And, besides I'm more interested in not needing a resume, but rather having some press agent in my employ write up a profile for me anyway. You know... famous people need profiles NOT resumes :=) ! Great review, Kristina, as usual. One other thing. I asked my best friend to promise me that if she ever saw me writing a self-help book, to please stop me! That was a sure sign I'd become a desperate writer. Thanks for the nudge,

Oh, great. Another one of those "corporate" books designed to influence and motivate employees. I have managed to resist such crud through the years, and will continue to do so.

Thanks for a "heads up" on a book that might be distributed by HR departments everywhere in the near future.

Hi Tony,

All of the money HAS to be coming from these corporate HR departments. I think if someone picked this up in the bookstore, they'd take the ten minutes to read it and walk away without purchasing it.

Regrettably, so many of the people (at least in my own experience) who are in a position to make corporate decisions are a product of an even older business theory: The Peter Principle. They have risen to their level of incompetence.

People who know their job and do it well are
seldom moved up the corporate ladder for just that reason: they are doing their job well. Why spoil a good thing?

This book is aimed at the managers who are reticent in vision, timid with effecting change and gennerally blissful in their ignorance about staying cutting edge.

You are absolutely right when you point out the simplicity of the message here. Sadly, this is new ground for so many "decision makers" in the corporate world.

As a consultant I see that reality far too often. Great review!

Hi, Kristina,

Thanks for the review. This book has been staring at me from every bookstore window in town. I've had an inclination to avoid it anyway; you've only confirmed my fears. I find it truly sad that such books are even necessary, to say nothing of the outrageous numbers of copies they sell. I just hope most of it is bulk purchases by corporate HR departments, but these days you never know.
