| Freak369's Full Review: Wilton Halloween Lollipop Kit |
Halloween is a special time of year in my house; we decorate long before anyone else, I bake like theres no tomorrow and the kids all love helping out with making costumes. When I first saw the Wilton Halloween Lollipop Kit at Michaels I didnt give it a second though. I already had tons of Halloween candy and lollipop molds and more chocolate than any one person should. So why did I buy this? Because I knew that the boys would want to make something special for their friends and little Annabelle could help them out without me having to worry about all five of them ruining one of my good candy molds. That was well over two years ago and yes, Im just now getting around to writing a review of it. Wilton has a few different candy and lollipop making kits on the market but in my opinion, this one is the best for Halloween because its easy to work with, the shapes are a snap to decorate and pretty much everything a kid could want or need in a kit is supplied.
Wilton Halloween Lollipop Kit 2104-1236
The plastic mold that you get with this kit features three fun and festive shapes; a flying bat, a smiling skull and a ghost. These are easy to decorate and since you get three colors to work with, you can make then in different ways. You dont have to follow the photos on the box so feel free to experiment with color combinations. The mold is your standard Winton type mold; thick plastic but easy to clean up when you are done. So far I havent seen this mold sold outside the kit so for me, this made a great addition to my Halloween collection of candy and lollipop molds. There is no need to grease or prep the mold with any type of release product, in fact, if you try to, you will end up ruining the chocolate. As long as you give the chocolate enough time to harden, you wont have any trouble releasing them from the mold and ending up with great looking lollipops.
You get three small bags of chocolate with this kit; five ounces of white, two and a half ounces of orange and two and a half ounces of regular milk chocolate. If you need more chocolate you can buy Wilton chocolate melts or use any that you have on hand. If you are going to melt regular chocolate bars you will have to wait a little longer for them to harden since they contain less wax than those that are designed for candy making. I suggest melting the chocolates in a small bowl or ramekin and checking it often so that it doesnt burn or scorch. The disposable decorating bags that come with the set are a complete pain to use, you waste more chocolate trying to get it into the bag than you end up using inside the mold. I suggest using a tablespoon to pour the chocolate into the mold then tapping it on the counter to lift out any air bubbles.
The kit also comes with ten lollipop sticks that are pressed into the sides of the mold once you have poured in the chocolate. To make these super strong, press in the stick then rotate it so the entire bottom part of the stick is covered with chocolate. The sticks stay in place once they are snapped into the mold but you will want to let the chocolate harden completely before you try to remove them; if they arent set up completely you will end up having the sticks fall out of the candy and basically end up ruining the project. You can pop the mold in the refrigerator if you want to speed things up but you do run the risk of having the brown chocolate getting a haze on it. You also get some decorative Halloween themed plastic bags that you can pop the lollipops into once you are done with them. The ties are nice but smaller kids might have a hard time working with them. One thing that I love to do with these is to shove them into a piece of styrofoam [or you can buy a styrofoam ball and cut it in half]; this is a nice quick way to make a centerpiece. Kids can pick out whichever one they want without running the risk of the lollipops getting damaged. If you are giving gifts for Halloween, you can tape these to the box or on a gift card as an added little touch.
Price
This set has a suggested retail price of $6.99, when you break down the cost of everything you arent really saving all that much money but it is a nice thing to have on hand for kids to work with. You can pick up a candy or lollipop mold for about two dollars, buy whatever chocolate you like and pick up sticks for few dollars. You are paying for convenience with this product so if you are in it for the long haul and you want to make a ton of these, you are better off buying the individual pieces in larger quantities. Another great thing to do is look for these at the after season sales; you can get them for less than half price and save them up for next year. You might run into a little trouble with the chocolate but that is easily replaced. If you do decide to pick these up on sale, check the chocolate to see if there is any bloom on it [a white haze]. This doesnt mean that its bad or wont taste good, it just shows that the chocolate has been exposed to extreme heat or cold and some of the fats have separated from it. You can still use this for this project and you wont notice any type of a taste difference.
The Bottom Line
This is a nice little kit for kids to work with and since almost everything you need is included, you dont have to worry about spending extra money on other items. You can buy more chocolate and sticks if you need more of them and the mold is great to have on hand for last minute spooky treats. Outside of melting the chocolate [which requires some parental supervision], kids can have a parent-free party with this kit! The plastic mold can be used over and over again so all you need to do is supply some extra chocolate and sticks and you can have your kids churning out tons of treats.
As always, thanks for the read!
