I have always loved the “Just Batty” line from Wilton; first off, it’s Halloween themed, second it has to do with bats and third. you can mix and match all the various items with each other. This year I had the chance to pick up the “Just Batty” Baking Cups at 50% off the suggested retail price when Jo-Anne Fabrics was having a pre-Halloween sale. Needless to say, I was in bat heaven when I saw them and am kicking myself for only getting a couple of packs. These are the perfect thing to have on hand for making cupcakes or muffins for your kids to send to school, when planning a Halloween bash or even for using as decorations. The design is clean and colorful and it’s sure to have your guests going a little batty when they see them. Since this is part of a series you can use them with other items from Wilton to put together a Halloween party that your guests won’t soon forget.
Wilton “Just Batty” Baking Cups 415-762
As you may gather from the name of the cups, these have a bat theme to them so they are great for jazzing up any type of Halloween event. These are standard sized baking cups [also called cupcake or baking liners] that will fit nicely into standard sized cupcake or muffin pans. These have a two inch diameter [that’s from the center of the circle to the edge of the lip] so they will yield about 16 - 18 regular sized cupcakes from a boxed cake mix [depending on how much you fill them that is]. If you want a flat cupcake that you can decorate with a stencil or create a little scene on them fill this about half way, if it has a slight bump to it you can straighten it with a cake leveler [using a leveler is easier than a knife!]. For cupcakes or muffins with a regular sized top to them, fill the cups about three quarters of the way. If you want colossal muffins full them almost to the top but use some type of a non-stick spray around the edges so that the batter doesn’t stick. You can skip that step if you are using a non-stick pan.
The one thing that I like most about these is the design. The cup is white with black bats on it; the bats have different expressions to them. Some are smiling with a goofy grin, some have their fangs out and some look a little scared. Behind the bats there are small triangles in green, purple and orange - great Halloween colors. To make things a little spookier, there’s also the word “eek!” in purple, green and orange. Since the background is white the bats and colors really pop out at you. About the only downside to this is that since the cup is white, it will show a little bit of discoloration if you are working with a boxed cake mix that requires the use of vegetable oil. Likewise, if you are using a chocolate or strawberry mix, you will be able to see some of the color through the cupcake liner. This isn’t to say that there is anything wrong with this but if you are going for something that looks absolutely perfect [like for a Halloween baking contest] this is an important detail that you need to know ahead of time. If looks weren’t enough .. these separate easily from each other and once you press them into the cupcake or muffin pan they stay put. I just hate it when you put the liner in and it pops up or goes crooked. This makes it easier to fill them evenly without having to press them back into place or run the risk of them tilting in the pan and baking lopsided with the liner coming out uneven.
Price
The suggested retail price for these is $1.99. That’s not bad when you consider that you are getting 75 cups per bag and they have such a cute design to them. The downside is that since these undeniably a Halloween product, using them at any other time of the year is sort of out of the question. I picked these up at Jo-Anne Fabrics when they were having a pre Halloween sale and Wilton products [at least the Halloween ones] were 50% off. I knew that they would eventually drop the price to 70% off but by that time there wouldn’t be any left. If you are interested in this design you can get them from the Wilton Online Store for $1.99, this is something that they usually have year round but if you are a frugal person, stock up on them when stores are having their post Halloween sale to save a ton of money on them. You can pick up other designs from Wilton so you can have a lot of variety when you are baking for the holiday.
The Bottom Line
As usual, I am kicking myself for not getting more of these when I had the chance. Paying a dollar for a pack of 75 cupcake liners is an awesome price - and even better, you get the very cool “Just Batty” design to them. These are great for cupcakes, muffins and other baked treats. You can cut up brownies or Rice Krispie treats and pop them into these for a school treat or to have on a treat table. These are also great if you have fudge that you want to serve and it eliminates having a ton of napkins floating around, all the treats can go into these then into a large cupcake pan to be served. These will show a little bit of oil [staining] if you are using a boxed cake mix but unless you really give right up on them, chances are you won’t notice it once you’ve decorated the tops if them. Even at the suggested retail price of $1.99 this is a good deal ... but for $1.00 a pack, it was something that I just went batty over ...
