| joylein's Full Review: Wusthof Trident Classic 8 Piece Block Set |
Over the weekend, one of my college girlfriends threw a lovely shower for me in her gorgeous new home. It truly was a divine time, and it lifted my spirits greatly. Among the many wonderful and useful gifts I received was the divine Wusthof Trident Classic Eight Piece Block Set. These knives are the very best for chefs everywhere...the box states that they are incredibly sharp. That is no lie!
Wusthof knives have been handcrafted in Solingen, Germany since 1814. My guess is that they really have a handle on what they are doing! This set is no exception to Wusthof's precision knife-forging skills. I have only used it for only a few days, and I am already impressed...
Look, Ma, My First Real Knife Set
We had originally registered for a great set of Henkels knives. My mother, however, uses only Wusthof knives and thought it was time to bestow a set of them upon us. I was truly surprised upon opening the present from her to find that she had upgraded us to an eight piece set of finely crafted, genuine Wusthof knives. Must be the German in us that compelled her to purchase this fantastic set...
I make home cooked meals frequently, but I have never owned even one really good knife that has stayed sharp. Over the years, our knives have tended to rust, dull, and, yes, even fall apart. On one occasion a blade fell right off its handle when I was cutting something, just narrowly missing my big toe! Needless to say, it was truly time for me to grow up and graduate to a set of finer cutting utensils! No more five dollar knives for me!
Let's Cut to The Details
The Wusthof Classic Eight-Piece Set includes the following:
One three and a half inch paring knife, which is perfect for cutting small vegetables such as carrots and small tomatoes.
One four and a half inch utility knife: Great for many uses such as cutting the fat off chicken. I have used it for this already, and it works wonderfully! It is very sharp, so you must be careful!
One six inch sandwich knife: Perfect for slicing that big ol' hoagie or hamburger. I have not had the occasion to use this yet, but it will certainly come in handy!
One eight inch cook's knife: Cooks everywhere need one of these for creating their tempting delicacies. Whether it is chopping vegetables and meat for a stew or cubing steak for kebobs, this is the knife for those who love to cook! Dicing and slicing are its specialty. It cuts right through mean with no problem. Slices right through...a little scary at first, but everyone needs a sharp cook's knife.
One eight inch bread knife: I have need one of these forever. I have not used it yet, but I can just imagine that it can slice right through a tough loaf of French bread with no problems. It is serated, of course.
One nine inch sharpening steel: I have never used one of these and do not anticipate doing so for a little while, considering how sharp these knives are at present. It is pretty much a self explanatory item...
One pair of kitchen shears I can throw out my old kitchen shears, as they are no match for the Wusthof version. Mine are old, sorry, and dull. These are guaranteed to last a long while!
Last, but not least, there is an attractive wooden seventeen-slot block included with the set. It is a light oak colored finish and is branded with the Wusthof logo. It includes plenty of extra spaces for the addition of extra Wusthof knives. It fits nicely on my cabinet and does not take up a lot of room.
Be sure to remember which set you are purchasing when you purchase a classic set. Upon arriving home from my shower, I opened my box and thought that some of the knives were missing. I was greatly alarmed at first, but then I realized that I had received an eight piece set. The extra slots were for additional knives that are not included.
There is a cautionary statement on the outside of the box regarding the sharpness of the knives. They are the sharpest knives I have ever seen! One must use extreme caution when opening the box or using the knives...I have seen what they can do to meat. I can only imagine what would happen to an unfortunate finger or toe should I not pay attention.
Blade
The blades of each Wusthof knife have been forged from "a single piece of steel". If you know any thing about metal that is forged, it is that it is much stronger than cast pieces. These knives are finely crafted. The blades gleam flawlessly. They are very polished and perfect looking.
The blades are crafted to make cutting and chopping a breeze. The cook's knife, according to the outer box, is designed to "roll smoothly" when chopping or dicing. Wow!
The edges of each knife blade are said to be laser tested. According to my Mom, they stay sharp for a long time, and are easy to sharpen. Guess I will find out!
The blades are stain-resistant. My Mom has had her set for a long while, and I can see no rust anywhere. That will be a change for me having used el-cheapo knives for years.
There is a "signature" finger guard at the bottom of each blade. The knives are easy to hold due to this feature. When cutting, I simply place my fingers in this comfortable crevice, and it makes chopping a breeze. The edge on the finger guard is not sharp, but rounded. It helps give each knife a sturdy feel.
As I have stated previously, these knives are so sharp that it is a little scary. I am a little wary of them thus far due to the fact that they are so sharp. My best friend once sliced her finger quite badly on a Wusthof. One should use extreme caution when cutting with these knifes and place them far, far away from anywhere children may be able to reach. I am not talking only about toddlers, either. I would avoid letting any young child use these knives!
Not Hard to Handle
The Handles of these knives are made from "nearly indestructable Hostaform-C, hi-impact poly"...according to Wusthof, that is. The handles are black with stainless steel rivets and a red and silver Wusthof logo. They are very attractively designed and made to fit comfortably in one's hand. I do not feel that these knives are hard to grip. I am very impressed thus far with even the handles!
In Closing
I am highly impressed, thus far, with my mother's wonderful gift of Wusthof knives. This eight piece set truly is a classic. Whether one is a novice in the kitchen, or a culinary graduate, these knives are perfect. Wusthofs are known to be among the very best, and for good reason.
These knives are a bit pricey, but they are worth it. Throughout the years, I have owned many inexpensive knives which were not worth keeping. My mother has had her Wusthofs for a long while, and thus far they have held up beautifully. I can anticipate having my set for a long while as well.
Super sharp, versatile, and perfectly forged, these knives are incredible. Freddy might consider turning his blades in for Wusthofs!
**As an end note, I would like to add that these are wonderfully fine knives for cooks of all abilities. Having said that, I encourage those who may purchase these knives to take great care of them. As with any item, Wusthofs last longer when properly cared for. My mother washes hers by hand and avoids putting them in the dishwasher. Like fine China, the Wusthofs need TLC.**
