| scharnet's Full Review: Wusthof Trident Under Cabinet Swinger Knife Block ... |
I saw one of these in the background on a television show about designing a couple years ago and fell in love with the concept. This is a knife block that attaches under-counter, but ontop of that it "swings". Swing it out when you need it, swing it back when your done. (We installed it between the sink and cutting board which gave us 2 areas we use it from.) I was so impressed with Wusthof for developing this product that I researched their knives and bought a set of their Grand Prix (which I will give an epinion for as time allows) to go with the "Swinger". I'm sure other brands can fit it just fine though.
Besides saving space, it puts the knives out of view from little ones (it sort of just blends into the cupboard). My 4 year old likes to "help" and often climbs up and sits on the counter, and he likes to play with things he finds on the counter. We had the knives hidden for years so he wouldn't play with them (out of site out of mind). The "Swinger" allows us to have the knives out and ready to use, and keeps them sort of hidden at the same time. The rotating base is solid - you can move it with one hand, but it doesn't swing so fast the knives come out. It also has MAGNETS in each slot that secure the knives into place. (Please note that really short knives don't reach the magnet well - I placed some paper towel in there to give it a snugger fit and it works fine).
WHAT IT HOLDS: It has 9 slots - ONE LARGE slot (for a chef knife), ONE slot for a knife sharpener, FOUR MEDIUM (fits carving knives & forks, sandwich/meat knives, etc), and THREE SMALL (for paring, and utility knives, etc). As an added bonus, I found that the slots are on both ends of the block. Theoretically, you could try to double up your knives if you wanted too.
COLOR: It comes in OAK or CHERRY. We bought OAK because that is the color of our cabinets. The medium shade matches well for us, and would go well with light to medium oak colored cabinets.
PRICE: The highest retail was $79 but I bought it for $49 delivered. The 2 places that had the best pricing at the time were cooking.com and eBay. Make sure you consider shipping costs into your decision because it is rather heavy, and some places charge higher fees but attract you with a lower price.
INSTALLATION: Fairly easy. Line up a graph, pre-drill, install. It comes with a graph that you can tape under your counter to line up your holes for drilling. I recommend you play around with the swingers positions so you can see ahead of time how it will land when it swings. What we thought we wanted changed once we played a little. By making a minor adjustment to what we thought, we are able to use it for 2 cutting locations.
