Incubus Volume Two by Yayoi Neko.
Warning This is a Yaoi novel. Yaoi is a Japanese art form, graphic novels (or manga) depicting romances between two men, written for and by women. They range from sweet romances to quite racy and graphic. If this is not your cup of tea, well, you have been warned.
In volume one, we met Judas, a rather shy young man with low self esteem, and the incubus who loves him, Lenniel. Judas, in the manner of the emotionally timid, has formed a crush on one of his Professors, Mr. Belgium , one that he would never dream of bothering the Professor with by confessing his love. Yet he tries to remain true to an unattainable dream. This is not easy when his dreams are filled with the seductive Lenniel.
However, the property that makes Judas so attractive to Lenniel, his soul, is uniquely unprotected, and therefore valuable to certain creatures, like the pure-blooded ifrit, Kent. Kent needs a soul to heal his lover, his young master, and Judas has one of the few that he can take. And it was during a duel for the soul of Judas that we left Lenniel, wounded by the much more powerful ifrit. And as Kent grabs Judas by the throat, Judas' life flashes before his eyes...a life filled with unloving parents, obviously damaged, and damaging to their child. We understand now why Judas is so scared of love; he has never experienced it.. And as Kent crushes the life from him, he realizes he has no reason to fight, and nothing to tie him to this life. Now... Kent prepares to take the soul he needs to heal his lover. But Lenniel is not dead yet, and until he is, he will never give up. He skewers Kent . Dueling law of the ifrit proclaims that Kent has lost, and can never again press this claim. Judas is safe. And Lenny proves that he, though soulless, is not without feeling, as he urges Kent to not give up hope.
Damaged by the duel, Lenniel stays with Judas, helping to heal his throat, and healing rapidly himself. Needless to say, he continues his seduction. And it almost works...if only Lenny had not passed out from blood loss and exhaustion.
In an interesting chapter, we get a ring side seat in the mind of Judas as he works things around. While many people have a little angel and devil telling them what to do, Judas has Rational, and his cricket bat of discipline, and the cat eared Impulse. Judas' problem is he listens to Rational far too much. Impulse, he LIKES Lenniel. And of course, since there is only enough time in the book for a really steamy surrender, instead we get another attack, and right at the worst possible time!
This time it is Akemi, a linil, like Lenniel, and in point of fact, his sister. Outside of a propensity for spontaneous violence, she also has a grudge against Judas and a habit of not letting Lenny dodge unpleasant truths! Can their already rocky relationship survive?
The art and story of Incubus have evolved a bit...Ms. Yayoi has a gift for exploration of psychology. And her use of this, and the back-story we are now privy to makes Judas' reticence to be loved (and that is his real fear, not of sexual intimacy) much more understandable, if no less angst ridden. (Japanese women apparently love angst.)
The art, already clean of line, uncluttered, with backgrounds used only as absolutely necessary, has progressed quite a bit. Her portraiture is better, and approaches closer to realism. Subtle details enrich the overall work, and she has embraced shading, both line work, and gray screen. The overall effect is a much realer, much more lavish, and lustier art.
The male member, glossed over in the first volume, receives greater detail, and she does not shy away from it. Also, these are not supermodels with wieners. These are real men, masculine and muscled.. And Judas, the Uke (passive partner) is not meek. He may whine about his situation, but he is quite willing to lash out and punch the source of his displeasure, something that keeps our Seme (aggressive partner) on his toes. And Lenniel is not the all knowing wise Top who is just waiting for the inevitable surrender. As Judas comments, "He's like a baby kitten, always wantin' attention."
Nor is the "villain" Kent a bad guy; you hope it works out for him as well. So, engaging characters, strong writing, gorgeous art, and steamy, sexy action...what's not to love?
