I like the fight of a big fish...but, lets face it...some days the big ones just aren't biting. So, what do I do to get the feel of reeling in a big fish? I anchor the boat under some shade and play with the panfish. Now, you ask...how can catching a panfish feel like your fighting a whopper? With the Zebco Micro Combo 11TS. That's how.
My ultra-light Zebco Micro Combo 11TS lets me feel even the tiniest bump or bite of a fish. When I hook a hand sized bluegill on this combo it feels like I have a big fish on the line. Lot's of action is the name of the game and when you have to settle for pan sized fish, you might as well feel what fight you can get out of them.
I have the triggerspin reel. My husband calls it the "upside down" reel. It is attached to the bottom of the rod, as compared to the more common reels that rest on top. For me, it is a more comfortable hand position, using my index finger to release the line, rather than my thumb. It came spooled with 4 lb. line. While that was adequate, I re-spooled it with Trilene Sensation 6 lb. line. I wanted the extra strength, because, once in a while I would get lucky and hook a nice sized catfish. Yep, that's right...I've pulled in a 5 lb. channel cat with the Zebco Micro Combo 11TS. Both the rod and reel handled it well. I was, easily, able to adjust the drag dial, situated above the handle, with a couple flicks of my index finger. I, also, made sure my anti-reverse was on, so my line wouldn't free-spool out. This made the fish fight the drag and help tire it out.
The 5', two piece rod, was bent double when the catfish swam under the boat. It never gave the appearance that it would snap in two or not be able to handle the action this fish was giving it. After, approximately, 10 minutes, the Zebco Micro Combo 11TS did more than I would have ever expected it to do. It got the catfish in the boat.
The ball bearing drive and gears (4.3:1 ratio) worked perfectly after landing this fish. I had been, somewhat, concerned that the gears may have been stripped. My Zebco Micro Combo 11TS finished out the summer and fall season, bringing in many more fish, in perfect working order. (Yes, I am a warm weather fisherwoman) I look forward to spring, knowing I have this wonderful combo to get back out there and have more fun with it.
I wouldn't recommend the Zebco Micro Combo 11TS for any use other than catching bluegill, redear and the like. Although, it will handle the occasional bigger fish without problems and make it seem like you've hooked your "whopper". This is a great combo at a great price. I paid $19.95 + tax, on sale, at Bass Pro Shop. I had more than $20 worth of fun with the one catfish!
