THE CLAIMS
You Don't Have to Give Up Fat or Carbs-- You Just Need to Choose the Right Ones!
All fats and carbohydrates aren't created equal. The good kinds nourish your body as they help you lose weight. The bad kinds--found in sugary, fatty foods like doughnuts, snack foods, and fast-food meals--damage your body's ability to burn off what you eat. Worse, eating them actually triggers cravings and makes you even hungrier!
On the South Beach Diet, by best-selling author and Miami Beach cardiologist Arthur Agatston, M.D., you eat plenty of good carbs and good fats--delicious, healthy foods that crush cravings, curb overeating, and leave you satisfied rather than starving. And now, with The South Beach Diet Good Fats/Good Carbs Guide, you have all the information you'll need to make the right meal choices--anytime, anywhere.
This Guide Does All the Work--More Than 1,200 Food Listings at Your Fingertips
You'll know at a glance if a food is compatible with the South Beach Diet--each entry lists its carbohydrate, sugar, and fat grams, plus all the foods are ranked "Good," "Limited," "Very Limited," or "Avoid," according to the nutritional principles Dr. Agatston explains in his introduction. Packed with essential information, food lists, shopping tips, meal makeovers, a Dining-Out Guide to stay on track at your favorite restaurants, and more, The South Beach Diet Good Fats/Good Carbs Guide is your key to lifelong health and weight loss.
My mother has always had problems with her weight. I am always trying to find a diet for her that may finally be the answer. However, having a minor in nutrition, I am very particular about what diets to consider. I almost always steer clear of the fad diets. For example, the Atkins high protein diet is not all that nutritional and most surely not the diet for my mother.Being a poor student in grad school, I was feeling too stingy about spending the money to buy the actual South Beach Diet book, nonetheless, I had to see what all of the hype was about and if it could help my mother.
After doing a little research here there and everywhere about the South Beach Diet I came across a used copy of The South Beach Diet Good Fats/ Good Carbs Guide online. After reading through it and taking it all in. I had an inclination that this diet may be the answer for my mother. However, the complete details of the diet are not provided, but I figured it would be a great supplement for my mother's core diet and easy to follow. She would just have to go by the classifications of each food: Good, Limited, Very Limited, and Avoid. I was going to use the guide, as well, to guide her.
My mother began the diet in the 2 weeks strict mode. With her we took the thorough listing of foods that were good carbs/good fats and made a grocery list. Between March and July, she has lost 30 pounds, dropped 4 pants sizes, and feels healthier than ever (she's always had high blood pressure and it is slowly going down)! She did not follow a specific meal plan as the South Beach Diet has and rarely used recipes. She just ate the foods that were allowed and didn't eat the ones that weren't. In her words "it is a fool-proof book." She is right. The actual reference border is very very orderly, concise and organized so accessing it and finding what you want is quite quite easy.
Here ia an idea of how the actual reference guide is organized:
NUTS
almonds...1 oz...7 total carbs...2 total sugar carbs...14 total fat grams...good recommendation
Obviously this listing is in more of a table format and not listed as I have just given, but that is an idea of what is included.
My mother has been on many diets and this is the only one I have not seen her miserable with. Trust me. That says a lot. I am so proud of her and am glad we have found a solution.
Not to just focus on the food lists and there ease of use, this Guide also has a skeletal idea of the actual South Beach Diet, A supermarket cheatsheet (which basically pertains to the diet staples), ideas to show that certain meals can be changed to be more South Beach acceptable to show meals that are favored do not need to be sacraficed, and last but not least, a guide for dining out.
I highly recommend this book because it is an easy, short read that packs a lot of punch. I am a firm believer that if you were to just follow the basics the Guide gives and eat accordingly you can lose weight because it tells you exactly what is good and what is to be avoided.
