Pros: Easy read. Laugh out-loud funny at some points.
Cons: Moore occasionally goes a bit too far and you can buy the book at Walmart.
The Bottom Line: Great book to get the left riled up and excited. Fun to read, more fun to talk about with others who read it. Michael Moore doing what he does best.
hiphop101's Full Review: Michael Moore - Stupid White Men: And Other Sorry ...
You may have heard the comparison before, but this book made me finally realize it: Michael Moore is the liberal equivalent of Rush Limbaugh. Sure Michael doesn't have a talk show and he is willing to talk to and debate those opposed to his political views, but he excites the left in the exact same way Rush excites the right. They both use forms of mass media to point out the relatively obvious blunders of the other side. Anyway, let me get a little more focused here and get onto the book review.
I would not recommend this book to a Bush fan or a Republican. I don't say that because of the fact that it obviously has a liberal slant, I say it becuase its written in an intentionally inflammatory style. "Stupid White Men" was written for a lefty audience and I believe it was written to get the left pumped up a little bit at a time when it certainly needed encouragement.
If you are a righty and want to be exposed to the left read "Conscience of a Liberal" by the late Sen. Paul Wellstone or watch Sen. Byrd give a speech on the Senate floor on C-SPAN. Don't read "Stupid White Men". This book will do as much for you as a Rush Limbaugh book would do for me. I'd most likely send it flying through a window within minutes of opening it. I'm sure this book was hurled many times by many members of the GOP. For those of us on the left, though, it was a gigantic breath of fresh air after we had our heads held under water by the Republicans since 9-11-2001.
As for the content of the book, it was an incredibly easy read. Normally a book this size takes me a couple weeks simply because I don't have the time. I made time for this book, though. I could not put it down and laughed through most of it. Nothing in the book was earth-shattering as some people who have reviewed this book make it seem, but there were a few bits of information which were pretty solid. In the beginning of the book Moore gives one of the best descriptions of the election debacle I have ever heard. Moore also did a fantastic job backing up many of his facts. In some cases he put his sources right into the body of the book rather than in a bibliography.
As much as I enjoyed the book and enjoy Michael Moore there were a few flaws. The chapter titled "Kill Whitey" for example made me a bit uncomfortable reading. The point he was making was valid he attempted to make it in a humorous way, but it went too far for me. It was hypocritical and unfortunetly showed Moore's tendency to be a bit childish at times (another good comparison with Rush). Moore also, in some cases suffered from a disease called AlGoreItis. He talked down to his readers in many cases like they were stupid (maybe that was the point since a lot of white men were reading). For example, he has a wallet size "cut-out section" of the fourteenth amendment.
Overall, despite the flaws, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. And if you're a liberal with a sense of humor, you'll enjoy "Stupid White Men".
One final thought: I must point out the irony of the "30% off at Barnes and Noble" sticker on the front of this book. It was ironic that a book with an anti-corporate and fair trade message ended up in places like Wal-Mart and Barnes and Noble.
