I bought a 96 vw jetta four years ago for $4300, with decently low miles. I chalk that day up to one of the worst days of my life. Since then I have spent nearly double what I payed for it in repairs. Everything that could go wrong with that car, did. I have replaced breaks, roters, hub and barrings on the left side, TWICE. The second time it broke was only 4 months after VW repaired it the first time. The dealership refused to admit the first faulty repair was their fault at all so I had to pay all over again. There are so many things I have had to fix on that car I have lost track. The parts are ridiculously expensive, you will pay twice what you would pay for american parts. You need specialized VW tools to repair half the stuff so don't count on being able to do much of the labor yourself. Every three months or so something goes wrong with it and each time I walk in it is hardly ever less than a $500 fix. My car guy up the street probably knows my favorite color by now. The pity in his eyes for me radiates to my soul. A week ago I took it in again, this time it needed a new power steering fluid pump and pressure line, a $650-$700 replacement. Nope, wasn't going to do it. I had finally had it with this peice of junk. I still have $1800 worth of repairs from the last 5 months on it! Yesterday I bought a brand new 2008 hyundai accent. I spent four hours at the dealership. "Aren't you excited?" I smiled maybe once the whole time. Excited? No, more like terrified. That jetta has ruined my outlook on cars. Please, do not buy this car, if you do you are in a world of hurt. There are SO many better options out there.
