Good Truck

Pros: Big box to haul stuff, Adequate power, Awesome ride, nice driving experience, access cab
Cons: Fuel economy, payload, recalls
The Bottom Line: Unless you need more payload capacity, this is an truck to have.

Just bought my 2002 Toyota Tundra Access Cab 4x4 with 49,000 miles on it. Has the 4.7L Iforce V8. About to get my first oil change.
I haven't tried towing anything with it yet, but it seems to have plenty of power for usual 1/2 ton truck stuff. Came with a towing package so I should be good to go when the time comes. Looking under the hood is like having a luxury car. The engine is quite cool looking and the gas charged shock things that hold the hood open make it very smooth and elegant. Hood "clicks" closed instead of a big "bang". Ride is very smooth and luxury SUV-Like. Extremely quiet with the windows closed as well. Overall driver fatigue is noticeably less compared with my '03 Civic. Fuel economy has been up and down. Managed to get 17MPG on one tank but mostly it has been less. Though it is rated for regular fuel, it seems to run much better on 92Octane premium fuel.

The pushbutton 4x4 works good. Managed to get it stuck once in the snow so far:) Would be nice to have a bit better payload rating but it does the job. Having a 4.5ft wide bed is perfect for hauling big stuff. The "suicide door" access to the back seat is perfect. Allows very unrestricted access for putting groceries in the back and what not.

There have been a couple recalls on this model for ball joints and brakes. But Toyota is good about making the repairs. Mine has had both repairs done and now works great. Stopping is not a problem and the ball joints are solid.

Still loving the truck. I replaced the steering rack bushings with stiffer "off-road" bushings and it holds alignment much better and has less understeer in the corners. Took a trip to Canada a few weeks back and it was great to drive long distance. Just need gas prices to come down more and I will be happy. No unexpected trips to the shop so far, just regular maintenance. Has about 59,000 miles now.

Truck is still running great! I have to admit I am jealous of some of the new Tundras now with the bigger engine and more goodies, but not planning to spend the money to get one any time soon. Up to 76,000 miles now. Only regular scheduled maintenance has been needed. I have done some light towing with it now (~2000lbs) and it had plenty of power to get me up the hills.
