RedLazarus's Full Review: Microsoft Intelli Optical (D58-00026) Mouse
Since the local Office Depots were going out of business, I decided to drop by to see if anything good was left to salvage. My friends had often recommended the Optical Intellimouse, but I never really needed a new mouse so I never bought one. In fact I still don't need a new mouse, but I just gave in to buying this one because it was the last one and looked like it was worth a shot.
It was worth a shot. I am very pleased with the performance of this mouse. It feels great in my hand, and it designed to fit both the left and right hand naturally. The two new side buttons can be set to do many different tasks, and work just fine. The only slight problem I found with this is that the button on the side opposite the thumb is a little tricky to hit correctly, due to the mouse's universal design. But after a little getting used to, you'll probably forget all about this little problem. As with most new mice, this one comes with a scroll wheel, and obviously the standard left and right buttons.
The software that came with this mouse was easy to install on my computer, and it lets you choose what the 2 new side buttons will be used for. Whatever you set them for works in most programs. If you turn the mouse program off however, the side buttons will do nothing at all but the rest of the mouse will work fine. In other words, the software is optional.
As for the versatility of this mouse, it is a USB mouse to begin with, but comes with a USB to PS/2 converter. I am currently using the mouse via the converter, and it does not seem to affect performance at all. The mouse works on every surface I've tried to far, from a regular mouse pad to a wooden table to a pair of jeans. The performance has been great on every surface I've tried so far.
Overall, this is a great addition to any workstation. It would also go great with a laptop, due to its ability to work on most surfaces and USB abilities. If you don't need a new mouse then stick with what you've got, but when the time comes to replace the little guy I would certainly recommend the Microsoft Optical Intellimouse. It is a little pricey, but it's definitely the most reliable mouse I've ever used.
