Where I've used It
I work at the campus computer store and have had the extreme pleasure of introducing prospective customers to the wonders of the Powerbook. At an education price special of 1,999, the features in the Powerbook can't be found anywhere on a PC laptop in a comparable price range. The base 400 Mhz G3 Powerbook model comes standard with a 14.1" screen, DVD-ROM, built in Ethernet Jack and 56K Modem, 2 Firewire Ports, 2 USB, VGA out, and the standard audio out ports. Wow! Try to find a comparable PC that can do video editing on the fly and have DVD ROM for under $2500! The Powerbook G3 weights about 7 pounds depending on what you put into the two media bays.
Accessories
The two firewire ports allow you to plug in a wide range of high-speed peripherals including DV Video Cameras, Scanners, CD-RWs, and portable hard drives! These small firewire hard drives can hold up to 80 GBs and more and fit in the palm of your hand! The DVD is quiet and works well for watching movies on the spacious 14.1" display. The two media bays allow you to interchange and mix and match between lithium-ion batteries, DVD drive, VST Superdisk, VST Zip Drive, and others. You can go a whole day with two batteries popped into that baby.
Performance
The performance is great. We're talking about performance levels topping that of most of the IMacs. For a portable, it's definitely got enough power to spare for most everyday applications and internet use. I've even edited movies on it without problems. I would recommend you get a memory upgrade to at least 128 MB, if not more.
Finale
I want to get my hands on one of these, at least until the new Powerbooks come out. However, there are only rumors as to when that will happen and I don't think anytime soon given that Apple has just released some new Powerbooks with larger hard drives. For a quality laptop with excellent features for media editing and inherent ethernet support, there's no better choice than going with a powerbook g3. Kudos to Apple. =) Happy Mobile-Computing!
