| zack95's Full Review: Compaq Presario 1692 (153295-167) PC Notebook |
The decision to purchase this particular model was based primarily on price, as I was able to buy the unit refurbished through Compaq with a 2-year extended warranty for just under $1200 total...And after having put it "Through the paces" for a few months, I can't say enough good things about it! Originally I had intended to use it as a second portable, but it has quickly and completely replaced my PIII unit due to it's incredible speed and ease of use - EVERYTHING is laid out perfectly, and it's an easy machine to get a "feel" for. Battery life holds solid at just over 2 hours when fully charged, which is perfect for watching DVD's (which, as long as you're facing the screen correctly, are beautiful) and although perhaps lacking a bit in volume, the built-in speakers sound better than any other portable I've encountered. I would recommend this unit to almost anyone, especially if it is to be used "on the road" a lot, it is a solid, well-built machine that will take a lot of knocks. As to complaints, really the only problem is a common one, most manufacturers ship with WAY too much software installed, which can slow you down, etc, and this computer was no exception. I would suggest prior to using this machine, plan on spending a few hours "tweaking" and un-installing any of the software you don't plan on using, and you'll be just fine. Lastly, as to RAM expansion, spend the $$ and buy it from Compaq, I had minor problems with this unit accepting "generic" RAM but the Compaq stuff works just fine.
