Pros: Great features for the price!
Cons: I wish the screen was exactly the same size as the computer when closed. It's smaller.

I knew that I wanted a touchpad rather than eraser-type mouse, an active matrix screen, & 64 megs of RAM. I also knew I didn't want to pay over $1000. This, at first seemed an impossible task, as most of the sub-$1K laptops had only 32 RAM and a lesser quality screen. I began focusing on the Compaq models because they seemed generally to be a good buy. Then I realized that I could get an open box model that still had full factory guarantee at a substantial discount if I kept my eyes open.
BINGO! I went to a Circuit City that was not on my normal shopping route and there it was- a Compaq Presario 1692 fitting all my desires AND had a DVD player as an extra bonus! Open box price was $895 and it turned out there was a Circuit City $100 rebate on all laptops that week. I did add the 3 year extended warrantee which put the price over my target, but that was OK considering.
This computer has a comfortable keypad, a user friendly touchpad, both DVD (&CD)& 3.5 floppy drive without having to switch around. The screen is sharp with great color. The JBL speakers have acceptable quality and it came with a lithium battery as standard equipment.
I realize I got a spectacular deal, but I researched around and found this computer available for as little as $1395 (use Smart Simon) and that is still a heckuva deal for all this.
On the mixed side, as a open box item, I did have occasion to send it back for a repair immediately. The internal charging unit had been fried in the store (I guess). The good thing about this was to discover that Compaq has a great service center. They sent an Air Express truck to my home, waited while I boxed (their box) the unit and took it away to the Texas repair center right away. I had it back in a week! The phone support people were very helpful and friendly every time I had occasion to speak to them.
All in all, I'm impressed!
