| jurusz's Full Review: Sony VAIO XG29 PC Notebook |
I change my laptop about once every 18 months. I had a string of Compaqs but the last one really began to upset me, especially the hours I had to spend configuring it to work precisely how I wanted it to work and figuring out the non-standard, un-documented 'features.' Then bits started falling off the casing...
Enter the Vaio. I was impressed by how smoothly the hardware ran and how it integreated with all the software I needed, the way I needed it. I've never had to 'knock the machine back to rock bottom' once because of configuration problems. It is, quite simply, a very well designed piece of kit, very suitable for the businessperson who needs lotsa power, space, speed, and most of all maximum reliability.
Two things really tick me off about the Vaio, and I wonder whether I need a few more months to get used to them, or am I going to look for something else next time.
(1) the little speed-dial thingy on the right of the keyboard. Talk about a hardware feature with no justification for itself! I've played with it, and managed to get it to work to about 60% of the way I want it to work, but the large number of application programs this thingy won't service, and the way one can get lost with it really make me wish I could delete it physically! Verdict:- a piece of gadgetry with no rhyme or reason for its existence.
(2) lack of a parallel or serial port on the basic machine. Ok, so the first time I forgot to pack my floppy drive or cable was an oversight on my part, idiot Jurusz. I managed to transfer the files I needed using the PCMCIA slot and a memory card and told myself sternly not to do it again. I did of course, and the next time I had to transfer lotsa stuff from a decrepid old machine using Laplink. I had even remembered to pack BOTH Laplink cables, but did I check whether I had packed the grey parallel SONY cable as well? No. Verdict: redesign the case, guys. I may be forgetful, but YOU try packing for a flight at 05:30 with the taxi due at 06:00.
Apart from that, a real pleasure to use. Well done SONY.
Jurusz.
