| hpvamp's Full Review: Epson Stylus Photo 870 InkJet Printer |
I bought a Stylus Photo 870 when I realized my stylus color 800 just didn't cut it when printing photographic output. One look at the sample print at my local computer store and I was sold. The printer prints in six colors instead of the regular four (it adds light cyan and light magneta) to yield prints that come pretty close to continuous tone printing (in other words, the color changes are smoother, and there is less color banding). I have pictures hanging on my wall that amaze my friends when I tell them that the ouput is from a personal inkjet printer.
After using the printer for about half a year print quality started to decline, the nozzles got clogged. I tried using the printer's head cleaning utility to clean the nozzles to no avail. Luckily, Epson's tech support team was able to help me by sending me a replacement printer, with a minimum of hassle, as well as a prepaid return label for me via UPS second day air! Needless to say I was quite impressed with them. I am now using the replacement printer and it works just as I expected too.
Though I am somewhat unnerved that the printer stopped working so soon after I had first bought it, the fact that the product replacement was handled so gracefully contributed greatly to my positive review. I hope that the replacement printer will not clog up like the last one did, but only time will tell.
The roll paper holder (which comes with the printer), is one of my favorite features. It's perfect for making 4" x 6" photos without wasting extra paper. It also "bleeds" the photo to the edge of the paper (eliminating the white border that other printers create), making for a very professional looking, and feeling photograph. The inks are also better and are advertised to last longer under light, though I have not done any tests on my own to this regard, this new feature should yield longer lasting prints, something any user would appreciate.
The printer is much more quiet than the stylus color 800 that I used previously, and although the nozzles may get clogged occasionally, occasional head cleaning should do the trick.
