My Xerox DocuPrint P8 was bought on sale for $229.00, and I think I really lucked out. My prior laser printer died in the middle of a print job (after 6 years of faithful service) so I did not have much time to compare printers. I knew the Xerox was rated as a decent entry-level printer, but the sale price was what really caught my eye. This printer performs as well as my HP work printer, which cost substantially more than the Xerox. This is a quiet, space-saving laser printer that delivers on quality. This printer is not designed to be networked and it uses the memory of the PC do complete print jobs. This accounts for the low cost. "Better printers" have built-in memory.
The two significant disadvantages that I have encountered from using the DocuPrint P8 are: (1) the printer cannot pull paper through its rollers horizontally so the paper doesn't get printer curl and (2) the off/on switch is in a terrible location (on the lower left hand side, if the front of the printer is facing you). I leave the printer on a lot because the switch is too difficult to locate. A minor annoyance is the paper handle. It is very stiff, and does not always lock into place without a little jiggle. Even so, this printer should be judged on the quality of its output, and on that score it does wonderfully. (Some people are overly concerned with pages per minute when buying home or personal printers. The speed of this printer - - about 6-8 PPM - - is fine. Who sits at the printer waiting for the document to print anyway?). This printer also does a very good job with black/white photos.
The replacement cartridges are not cheap since they often cost close to $90.00, but you can print 5000 pages from one cartridge! Try that with a deskjet. It just won't happen.
