| JBigDog's Full Review: SYQT SyQuest SparQ (SPARQ1AI-01) Drive |
I always like to browse Epinions, and I cannot believe that I saw this product. I bought my SparQ Drive about a year and a half ago due to the fact that it holds 1.0 GB instead of 100 MB like a ZIP drive. This company has promise. In fact, Iomega was worried that this company would actually steal their business due to a better product. However, the major surprise about this product, and the reason why you should not buy it is the company has gone out of business.
For the heck of it though, I will describe my experience with the drive. I have not had any problems with my drive like other people have expressed. I found the drive very easy to install. You need to use the floppy to initialie the drive, and then use the starter cartridge to install the rest of the files. Reading and writing is simple enough as the drive is mapped t your system like any other hard drive so you can access it in windows explorer.
The speed of the drive is okay. It seems to write files somewhat quickly. 15 MB of data may take about 30 seconds. I have tried t play MP3's from the drive, however I do not think the files can be accessed quick enough and therefore the music would skip. I have not tried running programs from a cartridge, but I would imagine not intensive programs would run well. I big program like Photoshop would not not not run well.
In conclusion, while I have had a good experience with this drive, I would suggest that you not buy it due to the fact the company is in Chapter 11. I know their website is back up, but that does not mean anything (it has not been updated since October 1998). There were also rumors that Iomega would buy them, but I am not sure if this came into fruition.
