| gkao's Full Review: AcerScan Prisa 640U Flatbed Scanner |
After seeing an ad in the mail for the Acer 620U scanner for $39.99, I quickly checked the epinions page for reviews. Then, after reading all of the reviews for this scanner, I decided to buy one and try it out. Heck, $40 for a scanner, where can I go wrong?
The answer: You can't!
My first impression out of the box was "slick design and portable size". Because the 620U is USB, it was very easy to install. Just plug it into the USB port, plug in the power, and turn the baby on. With Win98's Plug-n-Play feature, all I had to do then was put in the driver CD, then put in the Win98 CD, and presto! The scanner is installed.
I then installed the scanner program and the Ulead photo program. Personally, I love Photoshop. So I could do without the Ulead program.
So then I tried scanning in some photos. At first I tried the 100dpi setting. I can't believe the clarity of the pictures, even when zoomed in at 150% with Photoshop. So then I tried the 300dpi setting. Oh my goodness, the pictures were sharp as a knife. But you do trade about 5x the file size. A 2MB scanned photo at 100dpi is about 10MB at 300dpi. So if all you want to do is publish photos to the web, 100dpi is sufficient.
When I was first looking the 620U at the store, I was trying to figure out what the difference is between this and other $100 scanners. The only feature that I noticed was the 36-bit color scanning on the 620U versus 42-bit and 48-bit on other machines. But unless you're a professional, I doubt you can notice any color imperfection with the 36-bit color scanning. I can't.
All in all, the Acer 620U met and exceeded my expectations. It's fast, it's clear, and best of all, it's cheap. You can't go wrong with this scanner.
By the way, I purchased the 620U at MicroCenter in Santa Clara, California on 5/5/2000. It's $69.99 with a $30 manufacturer's rebate. I don't know how long this offer will last.
