I love HP products, and was disapppointed with this one when it came out. HP sometimes has trouble competing on the low-end, and when scanners got so cheap and everyone started buying them for $100, HP didn't know what to do. So, in their rush to get a product to market, they basically bought one from another company and slapped their name on it. And the scanner they bought was not very good to begin with.
For people wanting a scanner to play around with - scan photos to email to relatives, or scan some typed documents in to convert to a Word document, this will probably do the job for you. There are very few bells and whistles, and the resolution is not good for business or high-end work. The software gives you little control over the settings, and the resolution maxes out at 600dpi. Again, this is fine for basic home use, but not for people serious about their scans.
The connection is parallel only. It will work on virtually any PC, but does not offer the speed improvements that a scanner with a USB connection has. A page scan will take about 45 seconds.
For $89 dollars, the is the cheapest an HP scanner has ever been. If you are brand loyal and are looking for a low-end scanner, this would be your choice. If you don't care about the brand, and want low-end, go for a UMAX or Acer - they offer roughly the same features as this one, but for less money.
