When I lived in downtown Seattle I had US West DSL service, and I loved it. I could not imagine going online with a slow modem connection again. But, to my dismay, we purchased a home outside of the city and found out that a DSL or cable modem provider did not service our area. Until now that is.
Over the past 6 months I've been checking the @Home website to see if cable modem service was available in my area. In each instance I was disappointed to find out that my home was not serviced. But last month I decided to call @Home and see if they knew if service would be arriving shortly. I was considering purchasing the StarBand satellite service that provides high-speed Internet access but at a much higher price. So I called an @Home customer service representative and was surprised to hear that cable modem service was now available! I was very excited and even more surprised when she told me that installers could come to our home the next day.
I ended up scheduling the installation two days later. The technician showed up on time. He ran the cable and installed a USB network card and cable modem. He was very professional and took the time to show me what he had installed and how it all worked.
I can only think of one area that could have been improved. I would have liked a card with all the settings needed to duplicate setup. I had to hunt around find what news server to use to get USENET up and running. I was able to find everything but having it upfront would be nice.
The speed. What more can I say about the speed? Having had 28.8 modem access for the past year the speed still blows me away. I'm getting download speeds in the 2500 to 5000 Kbps range. I am probably the only person in my neighborhood that has service at this point so I'll be interested to see if those speeds slow down at all in the future.
I highly recommend @Home cable Internet service. Their customer support has been excellent. The installation went off without a hitch and surfing the Internet at high speed is a joy.
