| kmhinman's Full Review: Compuserve |
My parents recently bought me a computer and said they would pay for the service. When they bought it, they got one of those deals where they sign up for a server for 3 years to get a good price on a computer. Well, I guess I shouldn't complain, but unfortunately CompuServe is what they got me. For those of you who may not be up on news, AOL owns CompuServe now. The only thing I like is that it's a local call (all the other big names would be long distance). After that, I just don't like the service.
My first complaint, the stupid thing freezes all the time. I know it's not my computer, because when I use other servers (local) they never give me problems. How annoying when you have sat there for over 5 minutes trying to get on the stupid thing. Then you have to start the whole process over just to have it freeze again. It problem would help if they didn't throw so much garbage up on the screen when they first log you on. Their browser, some little window with "New" junk, and some other little window with "Contacts" junk. If I wanted all that, I would look it up myself. You would think they would have a way to stop it, but I can't seem to find it.
My second complaint is that browser they throw up. First off, even IE is better than this thing. I am a Netscape person so this browser does nothing but irritate me. For some reason, I can't bookmark. If you try to get rid of their browser, it disconnects you all together so I have to run Netscape at the same time, which can cause an overload to my hard drive, and of course my connection will die. Secondly, I can not find anything on it about configuration. They have some crazy box, but it doesn't seem to let me do what I want to do. For instance, I set my start up page, but it never goes there it always goes to CompuServe’s junk. I guess I'll have to call tech support and see if they can help me.
Third, they won't bill you by mail. My parents are only going to pay for this for so long then I have to take it up. I don't like credit cards so I don't own one. I don't like withdrawals being made from my checking account, so I have to use my parent's credit card. What do other people do who don't even have a checking account or credit card? I really don't see that as fair.
For those who are new to computers, I suppose they wouldn't know the difference, but for those of us who have been around awhile, this is very annoying. I've got 3 years to try to deal with them. I just hope they get enough complaints and come out with a new system.
