When the dust settles, MindSpring could be a top national ISP. Although it made for some confusing moments over the technical support phone lines, but in overall, this was one of the best ISP that I had experienced beside IBM Network. Still well worth the $35 start-up fee for the great service you got from it.
One big 'Star' for MindSpring because it delivers one of the most complete Internet tool sets around. Programs like Internet Explorer, Eudora Lite Mail, Free Agent news reader, FTP, IRC Chat, Telnet, and other TCP/IP utilities are easily accessible from MindSpring's own launch pad. The launch pad uses Windows 98's Dial Up networking utility, so it's easy to swap in your favorite programs, such as Netscape Navigator.
If you're seeking higher bandwidth, you can take advantage of 64-kbps ISDN service in some areas of the country at no extra charge. An even faster 128-kbps ISDN connection costs an extra dollar per hour of use. And if setting up your own Web site is in your future, the 5MB of server space MindSpring provides you will do nicely.
MindSpring's home page is pretty complete and has a good technical support section. In addition, e-mail was delivered promptly and files downloaded quickly in our tests.
As you can see, this popular regional service provider goes national and delivers top-notch Net access. It's a satisfying ISP for most users, so let give it a try with its 30 days trail period.
