When my three year old started with Reader Rabbit Preschool he could barely use a mouse. I thought the program was too advanced for him, but he sat on my lap and I coached him through the Shape Shack, named the pattern aloud for Pattern Parade, and showed him how to add and subtract in the Counting Club.
In a matter of days he was doing it all on his own. In fact, I bought a kitchen timer and limited his time on the computer because he would sit there for hours if I let him. At first it was largely guess work on his part, but this reminded me that if he was to learn it was my responsibility to guide him. He caught on quickly, though, and I was amazed at how much the program actually taught him.
Reader Rabbit pre-school is multi-leveled and full of incentives to encourage learning, as well as creative features that delight the child. He'd collapse in giggles at the comments made in the ABC Diner, and it was fun for me to sit with him and help him through it. Because it is so multi-layered it encouraged him to explore with the computer as well, and he discovered keystrokes that were shortcuts, and within a few weeks knew his way around the program better than I did.
I can't wait to try the personalized kindergarten . . .
