Faster than Windows 98 and one step closer to the stability of Windows 2000, Microsoft has delivered on Windows Millenium. Since installing it three weeks ago I haven’t looked back to Windows 2000, well maybe a couple of times. The most impressive thing about this latest incarnation of the Windows 9x platform is its speed. Boot-up time is half what it took Windows 98 SE on my PC; large apps like Photoshop and MS Office are slightly quicker too. It also seems Microsoft finally stabilized the Windows 9x platform resource management, I can multi-task Word 2000, Photoshop, IE5, and an MPEG4 movie with no apparent loss in performance.
As expected Windows ME has a larger foot print than 98, eating up a whopping 400+MB on my hard disk which is significantly more than either Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 98 SE; yet significantly faster than both its predecessors and on par with Windows 2000 Professional.
Although ME does contain a very similar look, feel, and even has some of 2000's GUI enhancements, make no mistake; ME ain't no 2000. Stability has apparently increased, less application crashes with almost all recoverable so they don't take out the entire OS; but its still doesn't offer the bullet proof stability I've become acustomed to in Windows 2000.
Plug'n Play finally works! Hot swapping USB devices often caused a general protection fault when I was using Windows 98, no problems anymore. The only problem I had initially was having to download new updated software for both my Microsoft Optical Mouse and Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro, you'd think Microsoft would add-in support for their own devices.
In conclusion Microsoft has finally got the Windows 9x recipe right. Support for cutting edge multimedia including built-in DV editing, true plug n play, increased speed, performance, and stability. I highly recommend dumping ’98 and jumping on the ME bandwagon!
