Buy this product BEFORE you need it, not BECAUSE you need it!
In the world of virus protection software, generally you go for either Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) or McAfee. Sure there are others on the market, but these two consistently rate the highest with geeks at the trade magazines (PC Magazine, etc.)
I've used both Norton and McAfee and I'm convinced that Norton is the better of the two. Why? Ease of updating and information available from Symantec.
First of all, the product is easy to install and use. NAV is very straightforward and you really don't have to have an MS in CS to use the product (sorry, I'm a geek as well and we can't help but reduce things to initials.)
After it's installed you really have very little to do unless of course it detects an infected file. NAV will set you up on a file scanning schedule. File scanning happens in the background. Updating is another story. If you haven't updated the definition files for a while, the program will tell you "Virus Definition Files are XXX days old ... do you want to update?" SAY YES!!! This is extremely important!
So many of my clients get this program only to install it and never update it. New virus and variations are being discovered all the time. Symantec updates its files every week. How often should you do this? At least once a month if you're a normal user...more if you download a lot of stuff (certainly no more than once a week.)
How is the update accomplished? During the installation program, a program group on your Start Menu will be created called "Norton AntiVirus". In that program group will be an icon called, "LiveUpdate - Norton Antivirus". This is the program to run. Run this program while you're connected to the net and it will download and install all necessary files.
This is the point where I find McAfee inferior. Many times while trying to update McAfee...I could not for one reason or another. With Norton's product I am always able to update without a problem.
Information is the other reason I recommend this product. Although you don't need to purchase this product to do so, check out http://www.sarc.com. This is Symantec's Virus Research Center. There's ton's of information about virus here. What they are, how they work, and what they do to your computer. Also, there's a section on this site about hoaxes. Ever get those annoying emails that say something like "If you see an email with the word...WHATEVER...in the subject line, delete it immediately or it will erase your hard drive" Well that info is covered there too.
Conclusion...If you're on the net and don't have virus software on your computer...GET IT NOW!
