| boonkauc's Full Review: Whistler DE-1650 Radar Detector |
I bought this radar detector about a year and a half ago, mainly because I had a very bad problem with speeding. Without even thinking about it, I would go 15 or 20 over the speed limit. I needed something to keep me from getting tickets, and I wanted something good. I asked the salesman at Circuit City what would be the best for me, and he quickly directed me to this model.
This detector is great, because it does just about anything. Not only does it detect all bands of radar, but it also detects laser. There are also both highway and city modes, which will filter out stray signals while in the city. The only problem is that laser is very hard to detect unless you or someone very close to you gets hit with laser directly. Lucky for the drivers, mostly just the state patrol uses laser(at least in Ohio), so you are usually safe. Not only does this model detect both radar and laser, but it also has a safety warning system with over 200 messages to let you know about upcoming road conditions, which is VERY convenient. It will even tell you how far ahead the road is blocked off if that is the situation, so you know what exit to get off at. Finally, for those of you who may live on military bases or in the Virginia's,where these detectors are illegal, there is something on this model called VG-2 cloaking. What this does is make your detector completely invisible to police radar. In case you were wondering, when an officer shoots you with radar, he also has another beam that lets him know if you have a radar detector. This unit also features black out or dim mode for the display, as well as a mute button. To top all of these features off, this unit has a text-readout display so that you can see what band of radar or laser has hit you, and also how strong the signal is, which is useful for spotting police officers.
I have had absolutely no trouble with this unit in over a year and a half, and it has saved me at least 6 tickets. If you feel like you need a little edge on the road, pick one of these up. The features are very good, and so is the price. Remember that these do not prevent tickets, but they give you the advanced warning to prevent them. If nothing else, this gives you an edge on other drivers, so that you know what is coming up ahead of you, and aren't caught by surprise.
