Pros: Compass feature, more-or-less adequate sensitivity for normal driving. Nice-looking unit, multifunctional.
Cons: Fiddly controls require help from manual. Ka-band sensitivity, long-term durability suspect.
The Bottom Line: Recommended for the moderate driver who happens to own a quieter-than-average auto, such as a large luxury sedan, and knows how to program small electronic appliances.

I picked up a DE-1765 in a pawn shop in 2004 for about $40. I was intrigued by the shape and the compass feature.
Radar detection is passable, similar to other Whistlers of 2002-3 vintage. I have used it almost exclusively in the city, preferring to use my Valentine or other detectors when on the highway.
Ka-band detection is somewhat weaker than I had hoped, but I have not yet found a good Ka-band source to test this detector against.
The voice feature may be appreciated by other users. I find that the volume control is somewhat dirty and problematic, and that the unit's highest volume is not quite loud enough. I have occasionally been unable to hear alerts over other driving sounds.
Display is adequate. Unit seems to be lightly constructed. Compass requires occasional recalibration, especially after unit is taken down and handled, e.g. for reattachment of windshield bracket or fooling with controls.
I retrieved and printed the online manual from Whistler's site, as the controls are not intuitive and need to be learned with the help of a manual. Most of the unit's controls are digital and require the owner to "step through" a setup menu using combinations of buttons.
