| casualsuede's Full Review: Panasonic SL-S262 Personal CD Player |
Panasonic has never been one of my favourite brands. I have a 32 inch TV from them and was never a fan of the picture quality. So when my old Jensen player literally melted when I left it in my car on a hot day (a unit I bought based solely on sound quality), I visited my local Fry's for a replacement. Back in 2001.
The Panasonic was selling for $49, from $69 and had the typical things that low end players had: 40 second anti-skip, bass boost, 4 different playback methods (Intro, random, repeat all, repeat one track) and decent headsets. However, when I took it home, the sound quality became apparent.
This unit does not have a good op-amp. It does not go loud enough. Often I would have to leave it on MAX to get decent sound. This did not improve much when I used more efficient headsets. The sound quality that the unit outputs leaves alot to be desired as well. It is thin in both the treble and the mid-range seems to be sucked in slighly. It is more bass heavy, but made worse with the Bass Boost. This is good for Rap, Dance music or heavily equalized Pop, but if you listen to acoustic or jazz, it can be a downer. It would also not play CD-R/RW as well.
However, I had dropped this unit twice and by accident spilled motor oil on it and it kept on working. But I did not have any qualms when I traded this in for my current Aiwa player, which is light year better for a few clams more....Rating: C-
