Pros: Plays MP3 files, front panel audio input, sounds good
Cons: Lots of skipping, lots of bad disc reads
The Bottom Line: Good only for certain specific applications -- and by far not the best MP3 CD receiver out there.

| bradleyb32's Full Review: Aiwa CDC-MP3 Car CD Player |
I bought this unit when it first came out, as it was one of the first affordable units that recognized CDs burned with MP3 files. My friend was so excited when he was the song titles running across the screen that he went out and bought one too.
Too bad he didn't wait for me to field test mine a little more. The unit skips often -- both on traditional CDs and on MP3 discs. It's also incredibly finicky about what discs it will read files from. I had the best luck with CD-Rs rated for "music," which cost a lot more than most CD-R discs. The CD player also had trouble when the car was ever off-axis (say on an onramp or even just making a turn). It would blank out for a few seconds before recovering. I often got disc read errors, which forces you to eject the disc, then pop it back in -- then find the song you were on, which can be time consuming when you're cramming 150-200 songs on a disc.
The other major flaw in the MP3 component is, when you turn off the car -- say to pop into a store -- then come back and start 'er up, the Aiwa would resume playing the MP3 you were on FROM THE START. I can't count the number of times I'd be running a lot of quick errands and would have to listen to the first two minutes of a song over and over. Or you could fast-forward through part of the song -- but that's a slow process, when it even works. Sometimes the unit gives you no choice but to skip the track entirely instead of fast-forwarding inside it.
If you're just using this unit for traditional CDs and stereo, it's probably fine. But then, there are cheaper units for that. There's a miniplug stereo input on the front for accessories -- like an iPod -- and that worked great. If you're using it for MP3 CDs, my advice is look to another unit. I replaced mine with a Clarion DXZ655MP, and I've been really happy with it. But there are lots of others out there now.
