| jeffs320's Full Review: Sony DVP-S360D DVD Player |
Let me just start by saying I work for Sony, in case you haven't read any of my reviews of Sony Equipment. Well, they opened a Sony Family Store in the call center I work in yesterday, and they had even better prices than normal on the products.
Now, I already have the 200 Disc DVD Jukebox in my Living room, but I only have a VCR in my Bedroom. So when I saw this DVD Player for $161, I had to get it. Now, it is B Stock (which normally means that it was purchased and returned to the store) but it was never opened, the box was just banged a little bit. So for that deal I couldn't say no.
Well, after getting home and explaining to my wife how good of a deal it was and why I couldn't call and ask her because I couldn't get to a phone (in a call center.....ok, so I stopped of and had a couple of beers with the guys on the way home and forgot that my job is to talk on the phone so I COULD have called, but whatever), it was time to hook it up.
Now, before I say anything else, I have a TV that is like 5 or 6 years old and doesn't have A/V jacks on it. SO, I have my old VCR attached to it using a coax cable (the cable that you get Cable TV with) and then I have been running the AV Plugs for everything from the VCR (Playstation, etc).
Well, when I went to watch a movie, the picture would start normal, then it would get really light, then really dark, and then it would distort for about 5 seconds. This cycle lasted about 30 seconds, and it happened about every 5 -6 minutes.
Well, I was quite perturbed, and I came back to work with it today ready to hit the roof that my new toy didn't work. I talked to a few of the Video Reps that work here, and they checked their database and said that this is normal. You can't run it through any pass through devices, because that is part of the Macrovision Copyright protection. In order to use this DVD Player (or any DVD Player as I understand it) you have to plug it directly into the TV.
Just to prove it, they had me go get my DVD Player from the car and connect it to one of the TV's here, and it worked with no problems. So now I need to buy a new TV, too.
Other than that, the DVD Player works great. It has the Dolby Digital Chip installed, so you don't need a Stereo Receiver to hook up 7 Speaker Surround Sound to it, and it is Digital Surround, so each speaker gets its own channel. The sound is unbelievable.
