After my old VCR "passed out" I was quite unsure of where could I find a high-quality, durable and economical VCR. So, I bought this GE VCR that seemed to have all those pros.
At first, I was pretty doubtful about this VCR. The price was phenomenally low ($79) for a 4 head HI-FIDELITY STEREO VCR with oodles of really interesting characteristics such as the Show Saver Memory Protection which prevents from losing all the information programmed on the VCR, in case of a blackout. Fortunately, I had a pretty good experience.
The on-screen menu is trouble-free as well as the clock programming. Most of its functions are quite useful and easy to use.
The rewind speed of this GE is not that high as the manual says it is but I would not say it’s a very slow mechanism. Furthermore, I would say that the Index Search System is nifty when you want to find that very special part of your favorite movie, for example. Incredibly, is very accurate.
Unfortunately, the automatic head cleaning system is not so practical. I bought this VCR about 4 months ago and I already needed to clean its heads manually. I usually watch one movie per day and believe me... the heads get grubby easily.
Another negative aspect of this video is that it is not the most attractive VCR on earth. Definitely not...
The image quality offered by the GE is wonderful. It is clear, detailed and shows extremely natural colors. I would also like to highlight that it has a superb still without shaky images. The slow motion and frame-by-frame advance functions work marvelously.
As I already mentioned, this VCR offers STEREO hi fidelity SOUND, which is excellent. Dialogues and voices are clear and is important to take into account that the sound has well-balanced, low and high frequencies.
The most attractive feature I find of this product is that for a reasonable price, you can find a VCR with a decent image and sound quality.
On the other hand, I know I can find other VCR´s for the same price with a much more elegant aspect than this one, which is rather... "repulsive".
Anyway, it is a high-quality VCR with all the functions any kind of buyer would ask for. If you don’t mind about its appearance, you have a worthy and accessible choice.
