Todd's Full Review: Etymotic Research ER-4S Consumer Headphones
Any Audiophile or serious listener who spends time on the road ought to get acquainted with the ER4S. They are small and lightweight and sound great. They also provide 23 - 25dB of isolation to the user making plane, train and bus rides peaceful and a musical experience.
Extremely accurate, the ER4S delivers detail like no other closed or sealed headphone. The mids are also very good and the bass tight and realistic. The soundstage is a bit narrower than with open headphones but a small price to pay for all they have to offer.
They are 100 ohm impedance ear plugs. Portable players have difficulty driving the ER4S and an amp is recommended to get the most out of them.
Two types of ear pieces come with the ER4S.The white flanged rubber tips seem to be the most popular for everyday use but there are those who prefer the black foam tips. They are easily changed and hold up well with a little care and cleaning. Most people find these tips to be all they need but custom molds are also available from Westone Labs and Earmold Design for better comfort.
A changing tool for the green filters and 4 new filters are also included. These filters prevent dirt and earwax from clogging the driver. It also replicates the pinna reflections of the ear. Be careful not to dump your new filters when you open the tool. Keep the opened end up!
The Etymotics are terminated to a mini with a 1/4" adapter supplied. The cable is 5 ft. long. A shirt clip is also included which greatly reduces the transfer of noise from the cable to your eardrum.
These also do an excellent job for studio mixing and on stage monitoring.
To own the ER4S is to love them!
